Key and Ignition switch
« on: March 31, 2008, 10:39:18 AM »
I have a 76 CB550 and it does not have an ignition switch or key.  I am currently looking to buy one off of someone that has one from a 74.  However it sounds kind of stupid but where the heck does the ignition switch mount on the 76????  Looking at my bike there isn't anything that really looks like it is missing.  Will I be able to mount the switch from the 74 onto my 76?  Thanks guys.

Also if anyone has any idea where I can get an airbox/chamber from for a 76?

Ignition switch mounts on the left side frame down-tube, just under the front of the tank.

I purchased an Emgo (sp?) switch from Dennis Kirk last year for my 750A, and it came with keys.  I would suggest a new switch, since the plastic gets brittle, and they don't seem to hold up well after 30 plus years.

As stated above the key switch mounts under the tank on the left side, near where the coils live under the tank.  There's a bracket you'll need that clamps onto one of the smaller backbone tubes:

There are a couple currently listed on feeBay.  Try a search on "cb750 ignition bracket".

Wont work as its a 550 not a 750.
Any 500 four or 550 four K up to and including 1976 will fit
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

The correct bracket mounts to a tab on the frame with a single bolt. This tab seems to have interfered with some brands of highway bars and may have been cut off.

There's also instructions in the FAQ on how to cut your own key for the switch you already have, or PM me your email and I'll send you a copy direct.
