Another cam question...
« on: April 08, 2008, 10:30:39 AM »
Ok, I am putting the top end back together on the CB350F, and just have a couple Q's.

1. I know the tensioner slipper fits into a little damper on the bottom, but does the cam chain
guide just "hang" from the top (top being at the top of the head) or does it connect to
    something that I am missing.
2. I never marked the orientation of the cam shaft lobes, to see which side is up/down. I
read in the FAQ's on which way to position them on a 750, does the same apply to my
   350?
3. Dumb question - from which side of the motor do you begin identifying cylinders #1-4.
On the side of the points or the other...

Thanks,

donny

P.S. I have read the shop manual and the FAQ's thoroughly.

1. If you're using a slipper tensioner the top of the blade effectively is free to move and pivotson the rubber bung that sits in the top of the crankcase and is sandwiched in by the barrels. The slipper tensioner has back pressure put on it by the camchain tensioner mechanism and pushes against the camchain when all is installed up top with the cam. Attached is a pic of my 750 which might help answer the question?

2. The cam should have a score mark across one end of the shaft that sits in line with the top of the barrels, usually on the right hand side over cylinder 4. Get the No. one cylinder (left most as you're sat on the bike) to TDC and then install the cam so that this score line is in line with the top of the head exactly. Be careful of course not to move the crank with the camchain when fitting over the sprocket.

3. Always count left to right as you're sat on the bike so Cylinder one is far left on the drive chain side and cylinder 4 is far right on the clutch side. I think cylinder 1 is the points side yes but as I've never run points I wouldn't swear to it  :D
