What year 450 top triple tree wil work for a 78 550?
« on: April 14, 2008, 12:26:33 PM »
I am wanting to put a 450 top triple tree on my 78 550.  I did a search and found that they should swap right out and was wondering what year or years are compatible.

I could be wrong, but I think all the post bomber triples will work K1 and up (and maybe even bomber). I put a K1 on a 500 and it worked just fine.

I think you might also have to use the bottom triple as well b/c I believe they were slightly off. I think the 450 is narrower from memory. If you need something let me know, I have a bunch of 450 scrap parts.

The offset (distance between fork tubes and steering axis) is greater on the 450 twin than the 500 four. They do however share the same width (center to center) between tubes.

So if you want to use the triple clamp from a 450, you'll need to use the steering stem as well.
