4-4 exhaust interchangeability
« on: April 28, 2008, 10:42:55 AM »
I've got a ’77 CB550K with one rusty pipe (4-4 exhaust).  There's a guy in my area selling a 4-4 from a ’78 CB750K.  Anyone know if they will fit?

never tried it, but seems to me absolutely nothing will line up.  beyond the hangers i mean the header will not line up.  and if they are in good shape i would think they would be more expensive than 550 pipes.  if stockness is not important to you there are some aftermarket options that will fit your bike.  search for aftermarket exhaust + cb550.

my route to get the 4into4 exhaust was to chop off the original mufflers get some replacements like the jcwhitney dunstall megaphone mufflers  27 inchers-54$ each, i ordered 4,.took the original pipes to the chrome shop, not a pretty price 240.00 for the four pipes ouch!!,,but hey i'll have four shiney chromepipes/ mufflers, not many bikes out there with four chrome mufflers ;D those mufflers have removable baffles, you can add additional baffles inside them to quiet them down ., still waiting for the chromemans call to pick up them babies-  k8750

Great idea - the pipes are in good shape, as are three of the mufflers.  The upper left has a good hole in the bottom.

If this thread would have been here a couple of days ago...I saw an immaculate set of 78 550 4-4's for $100 at the Tsawwassen swap meet yesterday... :'(, to answer your question, the 750 pipes wont fit a 550... if you're interested in a 4-1, I think I may have one kicking around...

Howdy Dave, pretty bike.  Holes on the bottom can be welded up pretty easy.  I think one of your pipes has been welded already, if it's on the bottom then it won't be very visible when it's mounted.  I'd call some muffler shops and find one who has experience welding very thin metal.  750 pipes won't fit, they are too big.  I'll check my collection too, I might have one for ya.

Thanks Jeremiah - the pipes are actually in pretty good shape after some good polishing,  I never even noticed the hole on the bottom of the pipe until I took it off so I could pull off the head.  If you come across a decent left or right upper, I would be interested.  My brother-in-law is a blacksmith, and can weld a patch - which I will probably have done until I find a new pipe.  Right now I have it patched up with some JB weld.

A DOHC 750 4-1 is transferable with a '74cb750.
The can mount point is WAY off, and there is a bit extra clearance on the SOHC frame with the DOHC exhaust.
you do have to "massage" the fit though.

But a 4-4...
Only one i have swapped is from a '81650 to a '79 650.
Due to the sidestand spring mount differences between the '81 and '79 there is a bit-o-interference that either a hammer or a grinder, and new spring mount location will not solve though.
