How many ball bearings in the neck?
« on: January 02, 2015, 05:48:38 PM »
Ok, I didn't realize that the ball bearing in the neck were free and not enclosed, so I dropped a couple and now I'm not sure I found them all.  Can  someone tell me how many ball bearings are in the top and bottom of the steering neck?

Somewhere around 19 and 18

I remember 19.

A good time for allballz tapered set to replace your old set of bearings? It's only like 30$

According to the Shop Manual (page 118) there are 18 on the upper and 19 on the lower.
Except the ones that are rolling around on the floor.  LOL

Like bjbuchanan said, go get the All Balls Tapered bearings.  Then you can just put your balls where they belong.  ROFL :0 :)

If your races don't have any grooves in them there is no shame in keeping the ball bearings. The tapered conversion is not expensive, but it's a pain in the ass and a propery adjusted headset works just fine.

Since you are this far into it, you may as well swap them out. They get a notch in them that craps up the handing. If you do a search you will find threads where they jave the number of the bearing and you get get it from a non bike source which is cheaper.
