Tach Cable Seal

On my 77' 750K the seal where the tach cable goes in to the cam cover is leaking, is this a special type of seal or just an O-ring type seal?
The pic on the Bike Bandit site is not real clear.

Not an O-ring.  It looks like a dime with a small hole in the center for the cable end to go through.  Yours is probably old, hard and brittle.  Pretty cheap fix and they are available from Honda.

Not an Oring, its like a minature version of many of the other oil seals on the bike.  It seats a ways down in the hole in the valve cover and seals the the tach gears drive shaft that pokes out through the hole.  A small screw, screwed into it can be used to pull it. I am using a seal from a DOHC 750 (read a few places that it was a better seal than the SOHC one and fits) and it has done the job nicely for about 4 years now.  Sealing the tach drive area has nothing to do with the end of the tach cable, yet it seems that many people try to stop leaks by installing orings or goop around the tach cable end fitting.  This only might suceed  in pushing the oil up the inner cable rather than keeping the oil in the engine where it belongs.  Have fun. . .

I did read in the manual that to remove it you twist it out with a  screw.
Off to BB I go.

Whatever you do ,

DO NOT RUN A SCREW IN BETWEEN THE DRIVE PIN & SEAL

 to pull it as some manuals suggest....you will end up leaking till you pull the motor or cut your frame..plus need a new gear!


If you take a sharpened scribe or awl you can punch a tiny hole in the side of the seal & then use a screw to draw it out.

agreed - be very gentle with the screw.  It worked well for me but someone else on this forum got a little aggressive and ended up with a permanent leak - DOH!  It helps to know exactly what the seal looks like before you pull it (get the new one first).

There is no reason to put a screw between seal & shaft very bad idea.. ask me how I know.. >:(

 Use either a smooth pick or poke a hole with an awl into the steel part, then thread the screw in there.. AWAY from the shaft..
