1982 CB650 Help, Advice and Opinions

Hey Guys-

I just picked up my father-in-laws '82 CB650 it has 9,800 miles and is in great shape and runs strong......

So now that I have a good start I want to go this direction with it

So I have a few questions since I'm going the semi cafe direction I want to clean up the bike and remove any unneeded items, I think the stock air box will help a ton, so I need advice on pod filters or some kind of other filter set up, will I need to rejet if I go pods?

Also anyone know a source for a good 4 into 1 or 4 into 2 exhaust setup, if I swap exhaust will I need to rejet?

I am also looking to get a shop manual, is the Clymer or Hayes better?

Also I want to swap Drag bars on, can anyone suggest a company? Also how will my linkages, wires, etc. work will they need to be lengthened or shortened?

I'm sure there will be more questions later but thanks for the help so far.

Also what is the difference between the CB500 CB550 and CB750 frame wise from the 650 I think I read somewhere that the 650 was made from the tooling of the 500/550 if that was the case wouldnt all cafe seats etc made for the 500/550 fit the 650? It seems there is a very limited amount of aftermarket support for the 650  as opposed to the 550 and 750......

Anyone have a source for aftermarket parts that fit the 650?

Anyone else have anything to offer? Found out I was wrong the bike is in fact a 1981.

Wow cool thanks for the advice Canuck, I really appreciate it......After much debate I think I am going resto also......the bike it to clean to hack up, I may pick up a 750 if I want a custom........

It only has 10,000 on the ticker but down the road this winter I may be thinking of complete resto now......

Does anyone make rebuild "kits" for these bikes? is a home rebuild feasable?

Links and or opinions appreciated.

Do you have spokes or comstars? Spokes look a lot better for a cafe. If you have comstars are they single or double disc? If they are single, look into dual disc upgrade. If they are already dual, the '82 650 nighthawk had dual piston calipers if your looking for a brake upgrade, '81 has only single piston.
That really got my attention - will the dual piston calipers fit the 79 CB650Z forks? When I asked a seller on ebay, he said that the diameter between the mounting holes was like 4 1/4 inch, and that seems different to me than 79 setup. To make it easier - mine forks have the axle mounted at the bottom(like your avatar), not bit-up-and-front like some customs.

Do you think they would fit the 79 fork?

Ok guys new problem, when I was changing my oil I noticed there was about a quart of gasoline in it, the bike hadnt been run but for maybe a minute or less.........so engine wear caused by the gas in the oil isnt my main concern........

I want to know what would cause gas to be in the oil and whats the fix for the problem?

When the floats in your carburetor are hanging open or not sealing correctly, and the carbs have a supply of fuel, the bowls will overfill and can dump some fuel down into the combustion chamber, past the rings, and into the sump.

This would also mean that one or more of your float bowl overflow tubes is clogged.

Overflow tubes could be clogged but sometimes they don't completely do their job, particularly with the lean angle on the carb bank when the bike in on the kick stand.  The 82 should have the fuel safety device that only alows fuel to flow when engine vacuum is present but this may be malfunctioning or even removed.  Check / clean your floats, float needles, and float levels.  Examine the pivot shaft for the float for any burrs or corrosion.  Check that the overflow tubes are clear and make sure your fuel supply is clean.  It is also always a good idea to turn your fuel petcock off when you park the bike.

It probably was very close to a quart, and it hadnt been in forever since the oil had been changed.....all I did was get it running for a minute or two and cut it off then change the oil, since I have about 2 days ago the oil level hasnt changed and the new dipstick doesnt smell of gas either.
