1976 CB750 6th gear not working
« on: May 09, 2008, 07:46:29 PM »
Greetings, all.  I got my gorgeous 1976 CB750  this week from a guy 90 miles away.  It sat for 3 years.

I've changed the oil, oil filter, and the spark plugs.  I have to wait on the air filter and the front boots.  Is there anything else I should do?

I know a little about motorcycles.  I rebuilt an 80cc 2-cycle suzuki, but it was a long time ago.

My current bike won't go into sixth gear.  Either that or it's missing a gear.  I only count 5 gears every time I shift.  It shifts rough from second into 1st...

It may be hitting 6th gear.  4K RPM at 60 MPH seems a little high to me.

As far as i know these old girls only have 5 gears, that could be why you cant find sixth lol

I just looked at the repair manual and saw that.  I feel so stupid.    :D

How hard is it to change the gear ratio?

Don't worry about it.  I had a 400F for a couple of years (which does have six gears), and I still constantly find myself trying to upshift from fifth on my 750. ;D

I've always driven sticks, and prefered riding old bikes.
When I first started riding Hondas, I would cruise around in 4th gear everywhere, because IO was so used to my older Briit bikes were only 4 speeds.
Went from always driving 4 speed manual shift cars, to an old (1946) willys with a 3 speed floor shift, No idea how many times I tried to shift into reverse driving down the highway.

You should really see me drive an automatic, especially when someone pops out in front of me and I move to jamb on the clutch and tap the brake. I'd be fine if they didn't have such wide brake pedals on those stupid things.

I have the same sort of problem ken, especially when i`m in my work boots. Changing between the wifes car (auto) the escort (four speed manual) and the work ute (six speed manual) i keep reaching for fifth in the escort after driving the ute lol or jamming the brakes in the wifes car.
Cheers

i think 4000 rpm at 60mph is right. it should give you 40-45 mpg which is right.

I'm always reaching for fifth gear on my wife's VLX, too bad it has a four speed gear box lol

I occasionally look for sixth gear on my 750, even after all these years. :)
