78 cb750k Choke
« on: May 23, 2008, 03:09:56 AM »
I was wondering if anyone else has a problem with there choke on a 78cb750k?I have to pull mine all the way up and I do mean all the way up and past where I should have to pull it and then it doesn't stay up so I have to hold it up while I start the bike.
I can't tighten the cable anymore ,and am going to get a new one but I figured I would post this first to see if anyone had any recomendations? I don't think if I get a new cable it will help the problem with the choke not wanting to stay up by itself.
Also I have pod air filters and the choke pull lever on the Carbs hits the pod filter on its way past, has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks

I had the same problem a few weeks back on my 78k and for the sake of $16.00 cdn I replaced it with a Honda Cable. Upon removal, I found out that the old one was a generic choke cable. ??? ???
FYI - I also had to adjust the idle cam screw located at near the mechanical device that the choke cable fits into on the carb side. Mine was not adjusted at all so I had a 2 part problem.

All works good now. On full choke she idles around 35k-40k but I only idle her for 2-4 min @ half choke.

Good luck.

I found some animal had got sick of the chokes staying jammed open so the PO had fitted a wickedly strong spring on the choke lever at the carbs.
Some kind soul put a post on this site and reccomended backing off the choke butterfly screws and then resetting the butterflies then retightening screws.
I now have a brilliant easy to use choke and have tossed that evil non Honda spring away.
I truely owe someone on here a beer..........Hush.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

FYI choke knob tension is adjustable at the knob. Remove the rubber cover at the base of the knob and adjust the knurled plastic nut clockwise to increase resistance.  This will keep the knob from falling down on its own. If the cable pulls out too far, it might be a  poorly made aftermarket piece, or perhaps you may not have the cable properly attached / adjusted where it clamps to the carb body.  There is some room for adjustment at the carb clamp.  The choke linkage may have also been messed up in a carb overhaul . . .It is a typical problem to have the choke linkage hit the pod filter.  Some bend their choke linkages, some carve away some rubber from the filter and some extend back the inner two filters with some short stubs of metal pipe (muffler pipe) and radiator hose / hose clamps.  Look at the problem yourself and decide what you want to do about it . . .

Hmm, I have the same problem but I can pull mine out and twist the knob a little to the left and it stays up.  I don't think it is supposed to work that way, but it works.
