OK, I'm dumb! Where do I measure 26mm from for my Float level adj.

 I'm rebuilding the carbs on my '71 750 K1 as part of a full resto.This may seem like a silly question but, when I measure 26mm using my float level gauge am I supposed to be measuring from the cut outs on either side of the carb body or from the base where the float bowl sits? I see no other reason for the cutouts and they are dead center on the base which makes it easy to get the gauge lined up right to the top of the float for measurement.There's a difference of a little over 1mm. That seems like alot considering how sensitive the pin is. Ive searched through quite a few threads and much to my surprise I didn't see anyone else asking this. I'm feeling kinda dumb for not seeing what is apparently so obvious to everyone else but I'm sure I'm going to have to troubleshoot plenty of other problems once this thing is back together and this fire seems easy enough to put out before it even starts. All help is appreciated...thanks in advance

If the float valve has a spring pin, don't allow the float to compress it during the adjustment.

Pictures don't show that.

Adjust float height with carbs on their sides, if possible.
