25 MILES of Freefall !!

I think it was today in Saskatchewan, guy was going to try jumping from 130,000 feet.. :o   :o   :o

I think that guy has big Titanium ones.. or maybe he entered the Darwin finals today.. ;)

Just joking RM  ;D ;D  when Joe Kittinger stepped of his platform in 1960 it was said he made his jump from the edge of space.

Joe jumped from 102,800 foot above sea level, although it is hard to determine where space starts, it's generally acceppted that it is 100km or 62.5 miles.

This guy is well short of space, but quite a lot higher than Joe jumped from. Joe went through the sound barrier at 714mph, I wonder what speed this guy will reach ?

  CBC news reports say the 64 year old Frenchman will reach a speed of 1500 km/hr. The jump will start at an altitude where its expected to be -115C and will be a 15 minute drop to earth.  :o

Some fall that Dave :o :o :o :o :o Joe's took 13 minutes 45 seconds but it depends on how long the guy is in free fall.
Joe was in it for 4 minutes 36 seconds when he reached 714mph...wonder what it felt like when he pulled the chute :o :o :o :o :o

Remember Joes speed was TRUE AIRSPEED....

Substatially different then indicated airspeed...or what you'd feel falling

For example at .80 mack or 8/10ths the speed of sound at 40,000 ft the indicated is about 220 Knots.

Air is less dense up there.






As opposed to density here  ;D

Openning shock would be relative to the indicated airspeed.

Also Joe had a drogue chute for stability.

And here I was thinking that you could only reach a certain terminal velocity, and that was around 300mph.

  It was a beautiful clear calm but cold 2C prairie morning today... the CBC news reporter - "We thought we were witnessing the launch," Zakreski said. "This gorgeous balloon had ascended up into the sky. It kept rising and rising and at a certain point everybody collectively realized that it wasn't attached to Mr. Fournier's gondola."   ::) ::)

That's true in the denser atmosphere closer to earth, but out near space where the air is extremely thin there's not much to slow you down.  This talk about Joe Kittinger reaching the speed of sound is probably a bit of a stretch, though.  The speed of sound is relative to the density of the matter it's traveling through.  Mach 1 in the dense atmosphere close to earth may be 714mph, but it will be much faster at 100,000 feet, so while he reached the speed of sound as it is at sea level, he didn't break the sound barrier at his altitude.  If he had, the shock wave probably would have torn his limbs off.

Ti = Titanium (after its symbol on the periodic table)

His eyes won't water because he's not doing 700 miles per hour.

700 is the TRUE airspeed.

His indicated will be about 120- 200 or there abouts.

It won't feel like 700 because the air is less dense. The less dense the air is the less drag.

What you feel is the drag of the air.
