New guy in Wisconsin with many bikes...
« on: May 26, 2008, 09:38:16 AM »
Hey everyone, my name's Jack and I live in London, WI (currently).  I'm 19, and I go to college at UW Whitewater.  I've been into Honda motorcycles for 5 years now, and have amassed quite a collection.  I have an '86 Spree, '68 Trail 90, two '66 S-90s, a '62 C110 cub, a '71 CL-100, 2 '62 CB-77s, a '63 CL-77, a '73 CL-350, a '71 CB-450, and now I have just gotten a '78 CB-750 K-8 from my buddy on this forum "Honda?" (Tyson).  I've been wanting to get a bigger bike for a while, but I've only had bad luck with it.  For example, I picked up an '81 CB-750c, which ran great and looked pretty good when I got it.  Unfortunately, I brought it home, and the starter went, and when I fixed that, it spun a rod bearing.  Junk.  I guess I've been "scarred" by the experience, and have shied away from the newer bikes entirely.  That's where Tyson comes in.  If anyone followed his story on this forum, they know that his 750 had it's share of problems.  He and I pretty much wrote off the engine as a whole; it simply had too many problems.  Therefore, I began the search for a new engine.  I found one locally on craigslist (in Milwaukee), and I picked it up (along with nearly all the parts from 3 other bikes) from another member on this forum, I believe it is "Stanley".  He was really helpful, and gave me a great deal on all the parts.

So here I am.  I need to find out if the engine will fit (F engine in a K frame), along with all the other problems the bike had before Tyson pulled it apart.  I'm no stranger to projects, and am looking forward to diving deep into this one.  As soon as I sell a couple of bikes out of the shed, I'll bring the "new" 750 home and dig in.

Thanks in advance for any questions you guys help me with, as I'm sure I'll have many.

Here's a picture of Tyson (left) and me (right), along with the bike-to-be resurrected.

And here's the stash of parts, along with Tyson and I fooling around:

Gosh. What a great pile of parts!
What was wrong with the "K"? It's hard to imagine anything short of a chain-thru-the-cases incident that could hurt these engines to a "throw away" status.  ???
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

I have nothing against the "K" engine, but it had a hack rebuild sometime in the past, and the oil passage that goes to the head plugged up with silicone.  Cam, cam towers junk.  The pistons and cylinders also needed to be replaced.  As said by Tyson: "you could fit an elephant between the cylinder walls and the pistons!"  The engine is all apart right now, and I'll use what I can off of it, but it's just easier (and cheaper) to use the "F" engine than to rebuild the junk "K" engine.

P.S. The 450 clutch confuses me, but that is for another forum.  The bike rides great otherwise ;)

Welcome to the fun! It's great to see more people from Wisconsin even if you are on the other side of the state. Now lets see you turn that pile of parts into a bike or two. ;D

Tyson's the one on the "bike".  He let me take a spin on it too, and boy, it handles like a rock! ;D

We've already pulled the engine, so as time and space allows, I'll be reassembling the bike sooner than later.  Watch for a build thread in the general bike forums...

Quote fail.

The 450 simply has too many cams.  No two ways about it.

And thanks again everyone(except Honda?) for the warm welcomes!

Heh, sure seems like you guys are having a fun time with all those parts, and that's what it's really all about in a way, isn't it?

I like the "naked bike" pic too.  I've sat on similar arrangements in the (recent) past, trying hard all the time to resist making "Vroom!  Vroom!" noises :D
