1977 CB550 - blue smoke
« on: May 26, 2008, 07:20:02 PM »
This past weekend, while riding with friends, my buddy told me that blue smoke was coming from my #4 cylinder.  Three days earlier, I had over-filled my crankcase.  Could the oil burning come from that?  When my bike is idling and running at low speeds, blue smoke isn't an issue.

Mac :)

Get oil level correct and then check every day you ride, if level goes down you have a problem

Blue smoke at higher speed (or under heavier throttle load, a.k.a. fast acceleration) can mean worn or leaky valve guides.

Do what Bryanj said, and if it's still burning oil perform a compression test with oil and possibly a leakdown test on the cylinder in question.
