'79 CB650 Gas Cap Recomendations
« on: June 02, 2008, 08:16:02 PM »
Hi all,

I own a '79 CB650 and am sick of the lame plastic gas cap. I removed the lock that fits over the top of the current gas cap, so a replacement doesn't need to have the groves on top to fit the lock. I am trying to find a metal cap that could fit my tank. Are there any alternatives from other Honda models that will fit my bike? A quick browse online led me to believe that a few other models had similar looking fits on the underside of the gas cap like the Honda cb175 for instance, but I really have no clue. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks

I've got a 79 and it has a metal screw down cap then a key locked bar locks over the top to seal and stop theft.
That's kind of standard on the non custom CB650 isn't it?
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Sounds like a trip to the scrap yard to look at old gas caps! seriously though, that would be the best way to match something up.

I rejuvenate mine each time I wash the bike.  I polished up the lock bar a bit (not much-it still looks like crap) and use back to black on the cap.  It looks OK.  A very well polished lock bar would look great over a nice black cap.

When I bought my replacement '79 honda tank it came with a metallic purplish gas cap.\
cost me 100, but it was MINT except for a bit of bondo work needed.

My '79's original tank also had a metal gas cap.
It was a faded black color, but metal, not plastic.

Both work with the flap latch the '79 cb650 tanks have.
Not sure if my gas caps are stock of not.

I thought they were all like that.

'80-82 yeah, but not the '79.

Why not just sand primer and paint?

Yeah, I think it's going to come down to the old sand, prime, and paint option. It might turn out to fit the overall look of the bike better than a shinny metal cap anyway. Thanks to everyone for their time and responses.
