Crazy revving...
« on: August 25, 2005, 11:25:11 AM »
Hello eveyone...new to the board and happy to find such a useful website.  I recently got a '76 750K....I love the bike to death, but I've got a problem the keeps progressing.  I'll be cruising along at any speed, tap the throttle, and it'll jump from 500-1000 rpm, then go back and accelerate normally.  It doesn't do it everytime, but most times it does.  If I give it lots of throttle, it'll either bog or jump rpm's then bog.  I figured maybe it was running lean, so I tried covering half the air box intake, and it didn't change much, except maybe top speed went down a bit.  If I shut the fuel off as I'm driving it seems to get a bit worse but not much.  If I let off the throttle at any rpm quick it seems to drop normally.  You guys got any ideas?  Does it sound lean?  Any suggestions on what to try?  Maybe a air leak?  Thank you very much.

Sounds like at least part of the problem is clutch slippage.
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.

Does it do it in one gear or all gears?

My 500 does this but only in 3rd. If I give it full welly it seems to jump out of gear and then back in, resulting in a short rev rise (and a jrky ride).

That might be...I think the guy before me didn't have the right oil in it, so I'll try an oil change and see what happens...

Well...just went and fired up the bike, put her in first, and my tach goes up, yet my tire doesn't move.  Great.  So, who can tell me where to get a decent clutch kit as a reasonable price?  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

What kind of oil do you think he might have used, synthetic? If so, may take a couple of oil changes to clear that up.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I use Moble 1 MX-4T. It is fully synthetic and have no problems. It was my understanding that you just couldnt use Automotive synthetic because of the friction reducers.

Am I wrong? Is what I am using hurting my clutch in some way??
