just my luck
« on: August 25, 2005, 05:55:28 PM »
I bought 2 cb's 76 (running no title) and my 78 that is my now daily rider ( as much as ohio permits) looked over the 76 today( using it for a chopper) and the stupid thing is a auto......only has 12k miles on it, so im not sure what im going to do now......
any one wanna swap a 76 auto 750 for a manual 750??

anyone here had or owned a 750 auto? how much slower vs the manuals? the bike should weigh around 400 lbs when done so it would be faster than the stock cb, not that Im looking for a rocket but it would be nice to have around 70 hp (rear wheel)in a 400lb package...

Nashport,

To get 70bhp at the rear wheel of an auto you will require the following.
Supercharger, turbocharger, neat nitro methane injected with large doseage of nitrous oxide and a jet or rocket at the rear end.
This will take the weight of your chop to between 900/1,000lbs.

On a more serious note a stock K series motor in perfect condition makes 67bhp at the crank (60bhp at rear wheel).
I seem to remember reading (probably someone will come along and confirm this) that the auto makes no where near this amount.
I don't know why the motor was detuned so much but there you have it, just stick it in your chop and enjoy.

Cruise on baby, cruise on. ;D

thanks for the info. I'm guessing the trans wont take the power and was detuned to keep it living longer....
even still in a bike that weighs 150-200 lbs less, it will still have pleanty of power.

I dont reckon you will be able to get that much off it without the use of exotic metals.
I run a CR750 race bike almost to full 1970 Daytona spec and it still weighs in at 180 kgs (396lbs).
You can but try, so good luck with your project.

Well on the old boards, there was a guy (can't think of his name) who ran a drag bike based on an auto, and swore by em! They were turboed, and he reckoned the auto trans was plenty strong enough to handle it, and the two speed auto's ratios were ideal for the 1/4 mile.

They were detuned with different heads and smaller carbs (24mm?) and heavier than the manual transmission models, but were excellent tourers with reasonable top end speed, once wound up. For a chopper it'd be ideal for comfy cruising, I'd like to have an original one, just because they weren't popular here in Oz and weren't imported in big numbers.

I'm sure you could fit a K or F head, cam, carbs etc to give it a bit more punch, and not having a clutch lever would give your apehangers that "minimalist" look, particularly if it's gonna be sans front brake too. Go for it! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
