Couple questions on my 76 750F
« on: June 21, 2008, 05:05:10 PM »
I pulled the gear selector cover and the front sprocket cover off since I'll need a new chain and sprockets before I can put it on the road and I want to replace al the royally f'd screws. Well, the oil was almost like water, so diluted from gas.

Do I need to worry about the cylinders being washed out and needing it bored before  can ride it, or just clean and rebuild the carbs and go along my way?

Also, when I got the sprocket cover off, I found that there was only one bolt holding the sprocket on, the other was sheared off.

Does this bolt go through the sprocket into the cash or just in the sprocket?

The small plate over the sprocket didn't want to come off and there's a storm heading in quick so I didn't want to chance getting stuck in it and covered the bike up and brought my tools in for the day.

I think the bolts only go into the sprocket, so you should be all set with new bolts. That plate has to turn, though, so if it's just the head that's broken off, there may be some stud left preventing it from turning.

As for the gas in the case, I don't think you would need to bore out the jugs just for that (unless you;re looking for an excuse, then go for it). You'll want to get that gas out of there soon, though. And get ready for a couple of oil changes - once for fresh oil, run it for a couple hundred miles, change it again.

As soon as I got the first bit of oil on me and saw what was up, I drained it. Unfortunately it had been sitting for a while though.  Not looking for an excuse to oversize yet. I just want to be fairly confident that I can go on and get it running so I can enjoy it. Then move on to the 175. I'll be sure to change the oil fairly quickly a couple times to flush the engine out.  Thanks for the help!
