Why are your carbs so dirty?
« on: June 22, 2008, 05:01:41 AM »
I was browsing trough some older posts, and couldnt hel but wonder what makes some of these carbs so dirty.
I have 3 cb's with 40 to 70.000 miles on them, and none of my carbs look so dirty or corroded inside. Is the petrol here cleaner, or will riding the bike a lot prevent corroded carbs?

By filling up with "new" gas on a regular basis, the "gunk" is less likey to build up in the carbs.
I use gas stabilizer on all my bikes over the winter season.

Letting the bike sit in a barn for 20 years will cause corrosion and varnish deposits in the carbs. The reason you see it here so much is that SOHC4s usually can be brought back to life and run perfect after 20 years of sitting and a lot of us are on a mission to find and resurrect every SOHC4 from every barn in the world! ;D Sorry, got a little over excited there. Anyway, carb rebuilding is a big part of the process so carb discussions are a big part of the tech forum.

There are old bikers and there are bold bikers but there are very few old, bold bikers.

Not doing what you can to make your bike ride-able during the best riding months of the year kind of defeats the purpose of owning it in the first place.

And let's not forget all the crap that builds up in the tank when it sits for a while.  You may buy a bike and look in the tank and it looks pretty good.  But in the far never lands that you can not see is rust and crap just waiting to gum up the carb ports.  Best to clean that old tank and seal it before you run any gas to the carbs.
