ignition timing?.

ok fellas, i need some help trying to set the timing on my bike ,when i bought the bike the previous owner had undone the 3 screws that hold the back plate on and thus lost the timing, i have re attached the plate and had a go at timing following the haynes manual  ??? my problem is that when 1&4 firing mark lines up 2&3 points open? i just can't get my head round it help please, also i am having trouble with the electric start ,again when i bought the bike and connected a battery the solenoid just clicked so i changed the solenoid now the motor turns but the solenoid is clicking still but faster like you had a loose earth or something? any ideas please?  thanks mick.

Mick,

This problem arose a while back, but I can't remember who solved it.
I am not sure if it was the free play in the back plate before the three screws are locked up.
If I remember and I have got all night will send you a PM.

Mick, Your points cam is out 180 degrees. Obviously the previous owner had an electronic ignition and took the cam off the advance unit, then hurriedly put it back on 180 degrees out. Either take it off (you need to spread the advance weights to achieve this) or swap your signal wires (blue into yellow and vice versa) and all will be well. Cheers, Terry. ;D

If I understand your plight, you have your timing plate 180 degrees out? Or, did you just run out of adjustment travel?
Did you dismantle your timing advance mechanism?  It can be reassembled 180 Out.

Re starter.  What is your battery voltage/condition, age, etc.

hi terry, could i have done this myself?  :-[ because when i started putting the bike back together i found the retard and advance mechanism was seized up so i took it apart to clean it and free it up ,could i have put it back together 180 degrees out ?  ::)  mick.

cheers terry and everyone else, will have a look tomorrow and two tired the battery is not brilliant but even hooked up to a car battery with jump leads it was doing the same ? i will try the battery off my good bike , thanks fellas  ;) mick.

That was what I was thinking of (runing out of adjustment) and thought you had solved the problem in an earlyer thread, hence the other thread that I posted to get you to look at Micks problem.

ok i turned the cam around and now the bike is timed up ok,it will start and run on 2&3 but no spark at 1&4, so i will investigate tomorrow,also got all my idiot lights working now ,i will give you an update when i get it running on all four   :)  mick.
