The 'If you have to ask" Q..

applies to most bikes.. pretty sad that a lot of you dont get it..

explaining why you would rather be on (insert any brand) bike than another mode of transport, does not require explaining to a lot of riders..

I ,personally, don't like the sound of a twin and had never given a thought to owning a Harley...

Now wait a minute, don't go lumping all twins together, now!  You've got your inline twin, your V-twin (from 30 to 90 degrees), your twingle, your boxer (opposed twin), and don't forget the everlasting parallel twin.

I LOVE the sound of a parallel twin (triumph, norton, bsa, and the yammy xs to name a few).  It's quite a distinct sound rolling down the highway at 7k RPM  ;D

I hate some twins too.

I pulled up to a bar on the MD VA borer on my way to Richmond last spring looking like this

One of the HD dudes (that was the only kind of bike outside) started asking me about the bike, telling me i was  "more real than half the dudes in here" because i was actually going distance with all the belongings I would need for a couple months.

Now I just assume they respect me and my ride until they prove otherwise and so far no one has.

DammitDan,

I stand corrected, I should have said v-twin, I have had a BSA and a triumph both 650's. I did not ride them enough, I had trouble with the controls.

If you like something a lot, never say it's not for sale, someone will buy it just prove they can.

Maybe you don't understand.  I realize my earlier rant was anti-Harley, but "it's" not about a particular brand of bike.  It's about riding.  It make no difference what emblem is on your tank.  What matters is that the wind is in your face.

Someone just had to go and make me "explain it to you".

I have one Honda 750 and one Harley Fat Boy. Love both. The Harley is an excellent bike. 2003 with 22,000 miles. Never had a problem. More dependable than my 75 750F. They are 2 totally different bikes. That is what has to be understood and appreciated. Doesn't matter what you ride, just ride. Anyone gives you #$%* about what you ride tell them to F@#$ off. Now, some friendly ribbing amongst friends is a different story  ;) :D ;D
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

We bought an '04 Sportster 883 Custom in Feb. '04 for my wife.  We have gone on several 2-up rides but I ride it mainly now because it is quite heavy for her and she is afraid of hurting it.  I like it.  I like the sound, the sitting position and is powerfull and fast enough for me.  I am now working on an '81 CB650 Custom for her.  I like all my bikes, CB350F included.
Now  1972 CB350FX (experimental v2.0)
        1981 CB650c Custom with '79 engine (wifes)
        1981 CB650 engine
        2004 HD XL883C Custom
        1977 Yamaha XS750D (in progress)
Then 1972 CL175
        1964 Yamaha YGS-1T
No ride is a Bad ride

Ok here is the back round i'm sure i'm gunna get flamed... My wife started to see me work on my Cb750 and she was thinking i might be gone ALOT ridding this summer and her dad has a bagger (93 police special HD) and he goes on rides all the time (used to have a GL1000 77' but he hates "jap" bikes  :-[ ) anyways so our friend had this bike with 2400 miles on it it was an 04 garage kept and its decently fast... ( it will almost keep up with the 750) so i got it for 3g's below blue book and got it insured and registered ( somehow i got stuck with paying for it even though the wife doesnt know how to ride and she always has an excuse to NOT pay for her bike be always deplets my honda fund.. :-[ ) so i have ridden it a few times and it SUCKS really bad its Rough, sloppy, it idles like the motor is coming apart... its heavy (600lbs) and its NOT faster than a stock 750... YET every day i have to hear about how great that bike it and how horrible the "honda" is and how i should get rid of my SMOOOOOOTH fast clean bike for another! bike payment and buy a Harley sportster.. YUK

anyways here are the pics let me know what you think...
First off, i have nothing against Harleys, just not my thing, but...
When people talk that way about my Hondas I always politely tell them to put their money where their mouth is. See how many takers you get with that one. My dad once embarrassed a guy on a hog with my scrambler 350 that way. But more to the point, if you dislike that bike,
follow your heart. You won't regret it.

Well, I STILL do not like Harleys or the culture the company commercially promotes...

However, Cycle World just had an article on a new Sportster designed for European market and it looks like maybe they're finally getting it right.  Though it still doesn't have a big enough tank to get very far.

Thanks again Hope for the link to the Cycle World subscription!

There are only maybe 3 Harleys i may even consider ever owning..two are Ironheads and the other is a later model. The first two are the XLH Sportster like my roomate has..you guys seen his it was the burned up bike i posted a while ago. and the XLCR cafe bike. The other model is the Fatboy based Nighttrain. The one exception to the rule would be a later Evo powered Sporty simply to build an XLCR clone from.

The XLCR was a good looking bike; but it was not especially successful from engineering or mechanical standpoints.  Thought it was very cool looking when I was young, though...
