tachometer questions PICS!!

I mentioned in a previous post that i was doing a good bit of work on my bike this week. I haven't got to do as much as i would have liked due to rain here in sunny Florida as i work on my 8' by 7' back porch (slab of concrete). I did get my cafe fairing in from Airtech and its a lot nicer than I expected. With that being said I decided to remove to stock bars and controls and put on my cafe style bar. This is were things got interesting (for me anyway as i have very little restoration experience, please bear with me).

The throttle was stuck as the bike has been sitting for god knows how long, so getting the cables off was a bit tricky but got done none the less. The master cylinder came off after busting my hand up a little but wasn't that bad. It seems I need all new bolts and screws for both as i had to impact them all out. I also need to replace my starter button which was broken off inside the housing but besides that the only thing that chaps my ass about it is the fact that it looks like crap.

The left hand controls and clutch seem to be my biggest issue as of right now. It looks to me as though someone went to work on the housing with a Dremel and cut a spot for the wires to pass through, out the housing. This got me wondering if this is even a stock part. I refuse to believe Honda wouldn't make the hole big enough for the wires to come out of leaving the owner to cut his or her own hole. This really sucks for me because i just cant let something that ugly slide. I'm not doing a complete restoration on the bike due to no space and lack of knowledge but I will do my best to make it look its best within my means. The two wires from the clutch also have been yanked out and i don't see how it would be possible to solder it back that deep inside the clutch. I guess I just need to get a hole new clutch control.

The last thing I attempted was removing all the break lines which required taking off the gauges. This would have been a piece of cake but the tach cable was stuck like chuck and for the life of me I couldn't find any pliers. So me being the smart guy that i am decided if it wouldn't come loose from the gauge I would just remove it from the valve cover. I got the screw out about three quarters of the way when i got to thinking about what was on the other end of this screw. If I remove it from the cover is it going to drop a washer or a nut or anything into the engine? Like I said I'm a rookie. I screwed it back in as fast as i could and my roommate got home and returned the pliers he borrowed without asking so we removed it from the gauge after all. Do any of you guys know off hand if I have made a really stupid error? Am I going to have to take off the valve cover to retrieve a little piece of something? Also what is the typical treatment for old busted controls, powder coating? Spray paint or replacement?

- First pic is the cuts made in the left control
- second and third are of th wire pulled out of the clutch
- Forth pic is the valve cover and the screw that i almost removed

Thanks in advance for any help available. If weather permits I will start my POR-15 Kit tomorrow morning wish me luck!

Just keeping you guys up to date so you don't think I am slacking.

Regarding the tach cable screw in the valve cover, you're fine, that's just a retaining screw.  Take it all the way out, and the end of the cable will just pull right out.

Regarding the control housing, the stock configuration is to run the wires inside the bars, through a hole drilled where the housing mounts up.  The wires come back out again through another hole, between the risers.

cheers

AAAAHHHH I see. So on my cafe bars I will need to drill those holes for the stock setup to work? will this effect the integrity of the bar?
thanks mystic 1 for your inlightenment

No more so than it does in the stock bars :)

Don't have a pic of the bar-end holes handy, but here's what the center hole looks like on 350 bars:

Edit: you can sorta see the bar-end hole here, not a great pic, though:
