You may notice a new search box at the top of every page - this uses Google's 'Custom Search Engine' feature.  I figured I'd test it out and see whether it works better than the default site search.  If this one is judged to be a big improvement, I'll work on a more elegant way to integrate it into the site.

I should add that this search function looks across all of the sohc4.net sites including www.sohc4.net, forums.sohc4.net, and gallery.sohc4.net.

I nominate Heffay to collect all the info from all the previous oil threads and boil it down into a new comprehensive thread we can put in the FAQ.

Geez Heff, if you want to rant that's cool. But not about (20W-50 Synthetic) Oil (that is, Black Gold, Texas Tea).

Amen to that.  I'll be running 20W-50 until november if this heat continues.

I dunno, man.  I always look up anything I need to know exhaustively before posting questions.  But some things are like Jesus or beer opinions - always up for more debate and further spilled ink.  A forum by definition would seem to involve some redundancy.

"Amen to that.  I'll be running 20W-50 until november if this heat continues."

OK Gents...here is a ligit question for you guys using 20W50 do to the "heat" outside.  What is the temperature that you feel you need to use 20W50 vs like 10W40?  And I still use the dino oil here in WI.  And don't be a smart a$$ and tell me to use the search button.  ;) :D ;D

We had about a month straight of near 100 degree heat.  Then my bike overheated and briefly seized.  That was enough to convince me.  It doesn't kickstart as well, but it seems to have helped.  Especially when stuck in stop and go traffic.

Grew up in Madison, I'm sure Osh Kosh is the same, weatherwise.  I'd run 10W-40, but I am merely an enthusiast.

Well we might not get a month straight but we can get weeks of near 100 degrees here and I have never run into an issue. So I doubt heat alone is the problem. The only thing I can think of is that you spend a lot of time in still traffic.

I'm sure this will be an unpopular post.  But, whatever.  Instead of using the search button. I looked at a few of the owner's manuals that Honda distributed with the bikes when new.  I know that most most don't believe Honda had a clue what was best for their engines.  So, those people can just skip this post as being irrelevant.  ;D

Anyway, the 72 Cb 500 manual says to use 20W-50 oil when temps are above 59F or 15C.
By 1974, when the 550 was introduced there was no further mention of 20W-50.  But, at temps above 59F it say to use 30W or 10W-40 (for all temperatures).
The '77 Cb750F manual hadn't changed from the 74 CB550 recommendation shown above.

For fun, I looked at the Shop manuals, too.  (Hey, I was at the dentist this morning.  So by comparison...)
500/550 shop manual does state 10W-40 or 20W-50.  This is in the maintenance section that was first published with the CB500 offering.
In the troubleshooting section, pg. 129,  it lists a trouble as "Difficult gear shifting".  Cause Number 6 is "High oil viscosity", with a remedy of "change the oil"
I must say that I found my 74 Cb550 a bit harder to shift with the Castrol 20W-50 oil I tried a few summers during it's life.  It shifted better with 10W-40, and even better still with Honda's HP4 semi-synthetic.

I looked in the 750 manual and found 40W/50W recommendation.  But, then I noticed it was for the headlight.   ;)
Moving on...
In the periodic maintenance section Pg 178 it also lists 10W-40 or 20W-50. Probably first printed about 1969-1970-ish.
On page 231 (supplement to CB750F) it specifies 10W-40 oil, with a distinct absence of a 20W-50 reference.

Maybe Honda learned something about the 20W-50 recommendation and changed it?

Maybe it only applies to a bike with the stock air box and tires?  ;D

Anything above 70-75F John. I put it in at the start of summer and change back to 10W-40 by mid Sept. I have run my bikes with 10-40 in the summer and you can do a simple test on very hot days to see how your oil looks - with 10w-40 mineral oil on any day above 85F the oil looks like water...in stop and go traffic the heat from the engine sears your face. Crossing the Mojave desert or Central desert in Baja I was happy to be running 20W-50 as there was little air-cooling taking place. I have not experienced harder gear shifting with 20W-50.

cheers

And by 1979, with the CB650, Honda recommended 10w40 for all temperatures, SAE 30 above 60F, SAE20 for temps below 60F.

Thanks for that Glenn, it's definitely an improvement over the forum search function. For anyone looking for more refined search options though, Google advanced search yields better results. Can we have a link to that or is it a problem to link to it from outside of Google? Though I suppose you can just use parenthesis and neg. signs in the custom search to get the same results.

Well, the PO bored the engine out as well, so that likely contributed to the overheating.  Add in the hour i was stuck in traffic, and VOILA!  CB Flambé!

Agreed.  If you're ever in Austin, I owe you a drink.  I'll change out of the bikini first tho, don't want to send the wrong message.  After that we can go down to 6th street and look up Leslie, a local institution.  Don't know who Leslie is?  Here, this'll help.

You'll need several more strong drinks after that.
