Front brake grease .... and brake pressure switch...
« on: September 04, 2005, 01:57:03 PM »
Folks,

I am in the process of replacing the front brake pads on my K0.  The Honda shop manual
callls for the area around the pads to be lubricated with a "silicon brake grease" and NOT
to use "molybdenum brake grease".  Where does one obtain this stuff...trade name?  Seems
like this would have a tendency to migrate to the pad surface.... :-\

Also, does the front brake pressure switch unscrew from the metal block that connects
the two brake hoses....or is it pressed in.  I seem to remember that it is sold separately,
but I can't find it listed that way now.

I am going to order replacement braided brake hoses.  I hope they have a similar external
apperance to the originals.

I also don't see much about what should be done with the disk.....clean it with a solvent,
sand it a little, or do nothing.  I suspect there may be something on it reducing the friction
as my right hand is getting much stronger then my left from squeezing it.  ;D

Jim

Switch screws in.

Sand the Glaze off the disk.

I might put a little grease on the back of the pads. Not around tho.

I usually just slap the pads in and forget about the grease.

For the grease I use Permatex Tune-Up grease.  It's a dielectric grease for use in the spark plug caps.  If it can handle the temps of the spark plugs it should be able to handle brake caliper temps.  I looked all over for high temp silicone grease but was unable to find any so I settled on this stuff.  It's pretty tacky so I don't think it will migrate to the pad.  The grease is used to form a barrier to dust and moisture between the pad and the caliper.

For the disc, just take a Scotch-Brite pad to it.  That'll take most anything off the surface.

The brake switch is still sold separately.  Check with Western Hills Honda or Service Honda here in the US; David Silver Spares or Classic Motorcycle Supply for overseas.

Generally braided hoses look very different from stock ones. You see the outer braided wire jacket although a plastic sleeve can be added to hide the braid, most people like the "hi-tech" look of the braid though.
You can get a pressure switch built in to a banjo bolt to eliminate the stock junction block and switch. This makes bleeding slightly less difficult, the junction block likes to trap air bubbles.
