Should I buy this? 1977 CB550K **Pictures added***

To start with, i will try to post picts today or tomorrow.
And i couldn't find a better place to post this, if i am in the wrong let me know and i can move it.

Its a 1977 CB550K with 1,800 original miles and clear title with matching mileage.
It could be in better shape. It starts right up and idles great, but there is evidence of the #1 carb leaking on the engine case. With a carb rebuild and a tune up and about two weeks of polishing and TLC it would look kinda nice. No dents in the tank, black paint in good shape. Original 4-4 exhaust too, no rust and nice and quiet.
It looks like it was kept in a backyard shed its whole life.

He wants $1,100 for it. We were thinking of offering him $850.
EHHHHHHH? :o

77/78 550 is the bastard child in all Honda's range and has a lot of model unique, unobainable, parts not least of which is the exhaust. Carbs are a one off sharing gaskets only with the other rarity the CB750 A(uto) and the 'orrible push in pilot jets. Airbox to carb rubbers aint existed for many years Etc, Etc.

WAAAAAY too much money for what it is unless exhaust is perfect (thus saleable)

Knock him down on the price, sit on it as an investment, I'd buy it just so my missus had a decent ride instead of her plastic chinese scooter! >:(
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I bought my 78 back in November for $250 in pretty bad shape but could find the parts pretty easy between here, ebay, and other places on the net.  It may be a little harder if you were trying to restore it back to original but I dont think it would be that hard.  For that much money and that little work needed I would pay $1000 for it but thats me.

Here is one on ebay that looks to be in worse shape than the one you are talking about and for more money.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Motorcycles___1977-Honda-CB-550-SUPER-SPORT-4147-Miles_W0QQitemZ370063443696QQddnZMotorcyclesQQddiZ2283QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item370063443696&_trksid=p3756.m14.l1318

Here is a finished auction for a 77 in pretty decent shape that has been updated that went for almost $3k
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Motorcycles___1977-Honda-CB-550_W0QQitemZ140240695188QQddnZMotorcyclesQQddiZ2283QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item140240695188&

So I would say his asking price is not that bad.

Hope this helps.

Bryanj, that a pretty harsh assessment of the 77 and 78 models.  There were the best developed of the 550s, with the rocker shaft fix, the superior "lean-burn" carbs, the non-testicle-removing fuel door, etc.

There's nothing wrong with the push-in pilot jets, either.  They work beautifully on mine.

Carb gasket sets are still available from Honda.  I paid about $28 apiece for them a year or two ago.  I doubt you will need them, though.  The leak you see below #1 was probably just a stuck float.  Pull off the bowl, drop the float, clean the float valve, and you'll be fine.

Stock exhausts for all of the SOHC4s are very difficult to come by and horribly expensive.  Luckily, MAC makes a 4-1 that fits all of the CB550s, and it costs less than $250.  It sounds excellent, by the way.  It is lighter and provides more ground clearance than the stock pipes.  If you use the stock airbox and air filter, you won't need to rejet.  Oh, but you said the pipes are in good shape, right?  Well, that's a no-brainer, then.

Yeah, it is hard to find used side-covers for the 77-78 models.  Has anybody ordered them new from Honda?  Be careful with the ones you've got.  I lubed the rubbers with silicon grease to keep them supple and prevent cracking on removal.

For a running 77 CB550 with only 1800 miles on it, I'd say $1100 is one hell of a bargain!

That insane. The 77/78 may have a few different parts, but it's certainly no bastard child. 98% of the parts are shared with the other 550's and are relatively easy to find.
I can only advice you to take a look at a few 550 before you decide on buying one, so you get an idea of what you can buy for a $1000 or less...

Depending on the cosmetic condition, a well-running CB550 with only 1800 miles for $1,100 would be a steal, at least in these parts, where any SOHC Honda in reasonable condition goes for well over $1k, and if in really good shape, often for more than $2k.  The 4-4 exhaust on that bike alone, if in good shape, would set you back a pretty penny.  I’ve never had any trouble finding any parts for my ’77, and was able to even find a very nice used airbox rubber to replace a torn one without too much effort.  I just got carb gasket sets from Bikebandit for $13/per.

Well, if it runs, that's a plus already. ;D

I say buy it.  Even if you do nothing to it, you'll probably make a profit on eBay.  And if you do what you did to your last 550, you'll make even more.  If you've got the time, I say go for it.

Best,
Mac

Those few different parts include, but are not limited to:-
Frame
Exhaust
ignition switch
headlamp bucket
fork ears
forks
rear wheel hub and brakes
side covers
tank.

Sorry i stick to my deffinition based on trying to get parts for one.
Yes it was the end of the line with 99% of any mechanical problems sorted but to try and get the stuff to keep it original and OK is a nightmare, simply because more were made you can still get 500 and 550 four exhaust (up to the K2 model) and they cost the same now as they did 20 years ago.

The carbs if OK are great but if you dont ride much having to strip and clean the pilots regularly gets laborious plus you need the bent screwdriver to adjust the airscrews

Looks good!  How does she ride?

Starts right up and idles. Rides smooth. The front brake sticks a little though.
We will bleed and lube it and it should be ok.

It shifts like a dream! i mean its only go 1,800 miles on it!

Ya that was a good buy for $850.  Like everyone has been saying some of the parts alone would cost more than that.  Doesnt look like there will be much work that needs to be done.

Well, my first thought when I saw the pics was "nice looking bike."  Reminds me of my 77 CB750K I bought new that year.  A little TLC and she will be real nice,  especially if the exhaust is as nice as it looks.  And if it runs and idles that good and you are after a 550 then go for it.  But I would not offer the asking and I doubt he is expecting you to offer his asking.  Bring him down and dicker a little.  Does it come with the owners manual and tool kit?  That would be a plus.  On a scale from 1 - 6, my 1977 vintage book lists it at $2,000 mint, then $1,600, $1,200, $900, $600 and $400.  I know many do not like the price guides but I am just throwing that out for you as a perc!!!  ;D  Good luck and let us know how you come out.
