What's this stuff on my chain?
« on: July 09, 2008, 10:07:05 AM »
I'm getting some kind of crap on my chain that is a dark red in color.  It makes my chain look like it is rusted.....and believe me, it's not rust.  I'm a fanatic about keeping my chain cleaned & lubed.  If I let it go for a few hundred miles, it will even end up on the sidewalls of my tires.  Has anyone else here seen this before?  I can't figure out where it's coming from.

Have you pulled the front sprocket cover to take a look?

No red fluids in these bikes that I'm aware of. Is it a new 0-ring chain losing factory lube? What type of cleaning/lubing schedule are you adhering to and what type of lube are you using. Can it be rust from the inside of a 30 year old 630 o-ring chain? Can it be a non chain related leak that is just falling onto the chain?
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

I don't have an automatic oiler.  I have had the countershaft sprocket cover off and it hasn't given me any clues.  The chain was on the bike when I got it.  I've had it off the bike to give it a thorough cleaning and can confirm it isn't an O-ring chain.  I always use Maxima Chain Wax on my chain (my MX bikes too.)  That stuff goes on thin and it's brown.  Turns to a waxy grease as it "sets up".  Definitely not red in color.

Puzzling.
