I'm off to Nashville for the weekend...A Report
« on: July 17, 2008, 05:51:45 PM »
...So, what is there to do that is interesting?  My wife has been there for about 10 days on a business trip, and I am off to meet up with her on Saturday for about 4 more days.  She has scoped out some music stuff, and I am just wondering about anything else.  Like any good bike shops?  Some place we just have to eat at?  I know it's short notice.  I meant to do this earlier.

I live in Nashville, and there is plenty to do around town.. I suppose it is what you interested in and what you wanna do. There are honky tonk bars galore, but if that isn't your cup of tea, so to speak, there are plenty of nice restaurants up and down West End Avenue, just off the main road (Broadway). There is also a bar in the Union Station called the Flying Saucer, with over 100 beers on tap.

There is a few restaurants I would suggest. Ruth Chris (steak joint). P.F. Changs, great asian cuisine. Amerigo's has your very authenic Italian food.

There is a bunch here, one just has to no where to look.

Best of luck. Hope ya enjoy yourself.

Maggiano's on West End (next to Outback) has the best damn Italian food I've ever tasted.  A party of four can get a family style dinner, with all you can eat.  You get to choose 2 appetizers, 2 salads, 2 entrees, 2 pastas, and 2 deserts.  So find two friends to go with you if you really want to experience the whole deal (if it's less than 4 then you order everything like you would at a normal restaurant, no all you can eat and everything's a-la carte.)

Monell's up in Germantown (north side of Nashville) is quite a unique place to eat.  If you want some true southern style cooking be sure to check it out.  They have a communal setting where multiple parties sit at a big country kitchen style table and pass the food around (all you can eat, too!)  (http://monellsdining.ypguides.net/)

For entertainment you've got the Bluebird cafe (http://64.20.48.250/~bbccom/) for everything from Country to folk to rock to blues, The Station Inn (http://www.stationinn.com/) for more bluegrass and folk country kinda stuff, the Ryman for bigger shows (including the Grand Ole' Opry), and basically all of 2nd Ave/Broadway is open all night with all kinds of live music and bars.

Arnold's @ (605 8TH Ave S). If you like meat+3.

Baja Burrito @ (722 Thompson Ln). If you want the best burrito or fish taco's in town.

Chappy's on Church @ (1721 Church Street). Personally I love this place. http://www.chappys.com/

The Flying Saucer, what a blast from the past. There I had my farewell dinner before I returned to Spain.

In Broadway street there was the ubiquitous Hard Rock Cafe. If I had to say what I liked more from Nashville when I was there, I would say the President Jackson residence, the streets of Franklin -south of Nashville- and Broadway Street. I loved the Opry Mills shopping mall but hey, that's nothing more than a shopping mall.

Near the Vanderbilt University there was a replica of the Parthenon. I visited it but there was something wrong about a greek building in North America -wouldn't be so in Spain-. Maybe that's the only interesting thing about it. You can also pay a visit to Jack Daniels, in a morning you can go, visit and return. I'm not a drinker but it is worth a visit if only as a curious thing.

+1 on Maggiano's. very nice..

I'm gonna have to try that place myself :P

+1 on the Parthenon. Very nice place. If you get the chance to go inside the 40, some odd foot, statue of Athena is awe-inspiring as well..

Okay, I posted this here and on another forum, and only here have I had any replies.  Shows me what kind of people you all are.

The Bluebird was on the list before I posted.  The wife went last weekend and has made it mandatory.  We have a Maggiano's here and it is great.  I tend to go to places that I don't have at home when I travel.  I can go to the Outback at home.  I do like Italian, so I'll give Amerigo's a try.  I was looking at the hotel website(we are at the Gaylord), and saw something about river cruises.  Any thoughts?

There is the General Jackson, Riverboat cruises.. It's made to look like the old timey cruise boat, with the big wheel at the back pushing the water.

The supposed have live shows and excellent food, but I don't know much more about it. Have been to one, but the wife has been trying to get me to go for years..

You may have to have reservation for it. Not sure.

It's located right next the the Opry Mills Mall, behind Opryland Hotel.

I remember that very well, I liked to spend sunday afternoons sipping a coffee and munching a chocolate chip cookie at the Starbucks in B&N, while I read the motorcycle magazines. When you are alone and you have your bike and family thousand of miles away, across the ocean, there aren't many leisure activites for single people on sunday afternoons. But I had to say I enjoyed them!!!

Just got home this evening.  Cool trip.

1. The Bluebird Cafe.  9:30 Sat night.  Saw Regie Ham.  Very cool

2. Country Music Hall of Fame.  Very cool again.  Lots of guitars.

3. Opry Mills Mall.  One very cool store.  The Gibson Showcase.  They BUILD guitars, banjos, and mandolins.  Way Cool!

We ate at the Stockyard.  Great meal.  We tried to do the Wild Horse Saloon, but they were closed for a private party.  Went to Big River instead.  Good food.  Ran out of time, so we missed Amerigoes.  We stayed at the Gaylord Opryland, which was also cool.  Good food, always cool and dry(cause it was all inside!!).

All in all, a good trip.  Even if it was only 4 days.

I'd go back just for the Gibson place.  I got there after the "shop" closed, so I didn't see them building anything.  That part closes at 3:30 PM.
