Does anything smell as bad as really old gas?
« on: July 30, 2008, 05:18:27 PM »
Okay I have started to work on my tank. It doesn't look terrible not great mind you but not terrible.
I have been working on draining the tank but there seems to be just a little bit of gas left in the tank that I just can not get out. Also it looks as if somebody did a bad rattle can paint job on the tank in the past. I got some gas splashed on the tank and some of paint came off in a sheet.
Once I get the last paint off in will go some Evapo rust and then time to strip the paint to see what is hiding.
The I guess it will pull the carbs and clean those and fresh oil, gas, and battery and see if I can get the beast to start up.

Well....it sounds like you have a good plan and to answer your question.......Yes....there are quite a few things that smell worse than old gas but I must say......old gas is right up there too and it really sucks getting it on you because it is a hard odor to get rid of......ask me how I know!!!!! :D :D

I am not sure about that. Good greif that stuff did a job on my throat. And no I didn't taste it. But it smelled so strong that it made my throat hurt.
One last thing. I can not seem to get that last bit of gas out. Any idea how to get the last little bit out. I have tried everything. I pulled the petcock, and even tried to drain it out the cap.

you probably end up putting some fresh fuel in,and shake the hell out of it,then drain as good as possible, repeat as needed...

Well lets see...a few weeks ago I was doing some gardening and I hit a plastic bag a mere 4 inches below the dirt line....I thought to my self that is odd and started to pull it out with the shovel. Well, the bag tore and some of the contents oozed out (oh and a bit kinda flung up on to my shirt!)...seems the previous owner had something die and thought it would be a good idea to bury whatever it was in the garden in a bag where it wouldn't decompose...it merely liquified!! I can assure you that my discovery smelled FAR WORSE than gas!!!! By the way, even after digging the rest of the bag up and using a shovel to stir the contents a bit I couldn't find enough a skull to determine what it actually was....several bones that resembled dog legs but not really sure...

Oh yeah, after mentioning this to my neighour he informs me that he knows of atleat 2 dogs buried in the backyard that drowned in the pool!!! Unfortunately he has confirmed that this was not the location of either of the dogs so I still have the possibility of hitting those at another point!

I do a lot of walking up on the tracks around the tree line of the city I live in. So do others, with their dogs. The dogs cr*p and the owners just plastic bag it then throw it off the track a couple of feet. Where it sits, and sits, and sits...well, you get the picture. I 'm dying to catch someone in the act so I can give them both barrels.

Yep a 750K8. I really need a stock seat for it. The old owner made it into a touring bike, Vetter fairing , tail box and big seat.
So I will need to find a stock seat, and turn signals to say the least to get it back to stock. Will probably keep the faring and stuff just incase I decide that a touring 750 is a good idea after all.

I've smelled things that were worse than old gas, but old gas has some kind of insta-headache powers over me. It really sticks to everything too.

Sucks that it's almost always part of a project.
"Hey, I'm going to be parking this thing for 20 odd years, maybe I should drain the fuel out."

Hey, you'll notice he didn't complain about the taste............  ;)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

i got one-i used to be a bicycle mechanic here in denver and a customer who did velodrome racing had his bike in for a new set of cranks. this guy would train like crazy and sweat like a crook in a line-up(no exaggeration). i pulled the cranks out of the bottom bracket and about a litre of aged ball sweat came spewing out of the frame-i puked immediately. worst smell i have ever come across and ever will.

Try www.oldgas.com

we love the smell of old gas.. usually means we made a new find...1960 or older..

the equivalant of the members on here finding a vintage bike..

That why you usually dont want to haul pumps in a van or Burban, it reeks forever unless they are already gutted.. one guy on there hauled a pump home in a MIATA.. pics were hilarious...  :o

My house after we eat Ranch Style Beans or tortilla soup.  It lingers and won't go away.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.
