Advance Mechanism Retarded?
« on: July 31, 2008, 06:25:00 PM »
Ha. Ok, anyways. My advance mechanism is short of the two advance indicator marks. I just finished reading
ttp://www.motorcycleproject.com/motorcycle/text/sohcign.html
an awesome post about the mechanism and the inherent over advance that these bikes are prone to, and how to adjust. but what about the opposite? Where the timing is too far retarded? Should I bend the little tabs (that go into the cam or black Dyna sensor) the opposite way?

What say you, are your marks right on the money? How much difference will this make?

Thanks!

If you have a Dyna S ignition then note that they generally fall to the right(advanced) of the "F" mark when advanced timing is properly set between the 1[]4  advanced marks. If you're timing to the "F" mark on a Dyna S then you are likely to be slightly retarded at full advance. Bending/tweaking the mechanical advance in order to have the Dyna S nail both timing marks sounds interesting and you should post your findings if you go this route. Or you can join a lot of other Dyna S users and leave the "F" timing a bit advanced.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

Two suggestions: Check the dwell angle as this relates to the range of advance.

If you have the advancer out, you could take it apart and check if maybe the old grease in between the ... (sorry, don't know the words) has become solid (stiff). Clean and oil lightly.

You have the original advancer, haven't you?

Yup. I've got the old advancer. And the Dyna S. So most of you guys running the Dyna are advancing the idle a bit or overcompensate? Hmmm. . .

Took one for the team.
I tried bending out the stopping ears on the advance plate and broke one off. I had gotten maybe 15mm before it started to crack. So be careful of the above mentioned article's advice about bending. Granted I was trying to bend out, but 20 thous would be a lot for those ears to bend.
Grinding might have yielded better results.

Guess I'll have to find a new advance mechanism.  :-\
