Wrong cam chain tensioner bolt
« on: August 01, 2008, 07:56:18 PM »
I have a phillips head screw threaded into my cam chain tensioner bolt hole.  I know this is not the right one.  I did some searching and came across this advice:

Quote
The bolt is just a "standard" 6mm set bolt BUT you must remove the threads at the end that clamps the adjuster as the bolt will "mushroom" when you tighten uo and you will never get it out again if you dont!.

What exactly does this mean?  I figured I'd just unscrew it and screw the right one in.  Wrong idea?  Someone may have already screwed this up since there is another bolt in it now...   ???

Just check to see how much taper the bolt has on the end. If its pretty much flat, take a file and make a nice 45* angle at the end all the way around the bolt, maybe about 1/16" wide. The original post you were looking at is referring to the possibility that upon tightening the bolt, the pressure on the end (used for clamping) will mushroom, and you wouldn't be able to remove the bolt without screwing up the threads in your tensioner.
