BROKE MY EFFING TACH...ANY TIPS?
« on: August 09, 2008, 05:35:33 PM »
I am restoring my K4 750, it is going well but slow, I decide to reface my gauges.
I gently pry the ring off and separate the gauge with swiss-like precision in about 5 min.
I then proceed to gently pull up on the needle expecting it to slide off the driveshaft... (I did this on my 550 with no problem).
welp..it came off with a snap. busted. EFF.
Does anyone have any tips for the needle removal??? should it just pull off??   I was hoping to do my speedo too..

Doh! I hate when that happens.

I have a spare 74 tach in the garage.

PM me if you need it...  maybe we could swap for something.

Best of luck with your rebuild.  I checked out your photo gallery and gotta say your 550 looks killer with the whitewalls.

I would say you should send that broken unit to me, since I've been looking for a broken gauge housing!

Oh, and I'm sorry for your loss  :-[

I use the 2 spoon trick that I heard here.  Hold the 2 spoons face up with an edge of each spoon under the needle.  Slowly pry up on the needle evenly with both spoons and it will pop right off.

I used the spoon trick as well.  Worked like a champ.

Damn! I should have known about the spoon trick. I bought a set of instruments to replace the cover, and as the faces looked good, I tried to remove the needle to change the faces too. I gave up when I understood I could ruin the original faces, that were not that bad.
