Coolest ride this summer
« on: August 14, 2008, 08:35:01 PM »
Last weekend(Aug 8-10).....my pal from high school days(early 70's) came over from SF bay area to my new digs....1750 ft. into Sierra Nevada mts.   .....We went across hiway 4 for 100 miles (ebetts pass....8700 ft.) Dropped down to Walker,Ca. 5000ft......had lunch....highly recommended place to stop(hiway 395)....Called Walker BBQ......south of town. When we first pulled in there....crotch rocket dude getting arrested for evading a CHP....right in front of everyone there havn lunch......man... that guy pissed the cop off!!!! Story was that he broke away from the pack he was ridin' with andwas doing 100 plus passing cars for awhile and didn't even know he was bein' chased. They confiscated his bike and made him sit in jail all weekend. After that show,we contnued down south about 20 miles to hiway 108 west(Sonora Pass)......wadda ride!!!!!! Went by a Marine base and started climbing....got to 9600 ft. at Sonora Pass and went down into some totally beautiful scenery!!! Got down into this ski town called Strawberry and saw a 73-74 750 sittin' on the side of the road with a for sale sign...$500. Its not too far from me so I may go back & check it out. It was kinda rat lookin' but had current plates.Maybe offer him less? I changed main jets from 138.5 to 130 before this ride and even brought 120s &125s in case but didn'nt need them.....bike ran strong all day for 244 miles of a keeper memory!!!!

Mrbreeze, it seems as if you did some riding in very "high" riding. Your posting is peppered with altitudes 1750, 8600, 5000, 9000+. I'm just curious as to what you were riding at the time and how did it perform at these altitudes? Was there there a noticeable difference?

It was a very awesome experience. The bike ran well.I went from 138.5 mains(was running them in the valley)down to 130's. Bike is stock 750K5 with open Kerker 4to1 ...K&N pods....Dyna 2000 ignition. I figured I might need to jet down if I got higher than 8000 ft. or so but all was fine.So.......who else has a killer ride story??

A completely unexpected one actually:

Last week we had a family holiday at a place called Centre Parcs nr Mansfield in England,  I had to work on the Monday so we agreed that they (Wife, Son and Daughter) would drive down during the day, and I would ride there on the 550, about 55 miles, straight from work that evening.  The weather was poor that Monday evening and the ride down was horrible, I arrived cold wet and miserable :-[

The weather wasn't brilliant all week, it didn't spoil the holiday but I wasn't looking forward to the ride back :(

Come the Saturday morning however, the weather was absolutely glorious, the roads were bone dry and there wasn't a cloud in the sky.  I got to ride through some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK, finishing with a ride along here:

One of the greatest and most (in)famous roads in Europe, which I just happen to live at the foot of 8)

It's always the unexpected joys that you end up remembering ;D
