  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

As far as i can see they are basically ram jets, WW2 V1 and V2 bombs aka buzz bombs.
One of the simplest jets to make.....
So why buy one when you can make one

A pulse jet is not a ramjet.

Yeah, it's a pulse jet. Coincidentally last week I was watching a program on TV called "Scrapheap Challenge" (sister program to "Junkyard Wars" in the US) where the two teams had to make jet powered cars in 10 hours entirely from scrap parts.

One team made a jet using a big truck turbocharger, and the other team built a pulse jet, which eventually won the challenge. Fascinating stuff, and at the time, owning an engine powered bicycle I thought, "Ooooher, a little pulse jet would be cool on a bicycle"!

Only problem I can see is that as it chews thru 1 gallon of gas every 2 minutes, or 30 gallons per hour, it makes a Hummer look positively thrifty! Cheers, Terry. ;D

My bicycle club and another group in New York made a Pulse Jet bike on a motorcycle frame(cb I think). It set off car alarms all the way down the street...I'll try to find a youtube link.

G'Day Miles, how are you mate? Yeah, I'd love to see that!

I installed a little 70cc two stroke engine on my bicycle, and I've got another engine "kit" in a box, so my cuz and I are turning it into a "twin engined" bicycle, so that next year we can take it to the salt flats at Lake Gairdner in South Australia to attempt a motorised bicycle land speed record. Not as much fun as a pulse jet, but it'll still be a hoot! ;D

Jesus, that's a bicycle club???? I don't think I'll be riding down that street in a hurry, I don't think I'd get out alive!

Ha ha, that thing didn't seem to have a great deal of thrust mate, I reckon you're right my bike will do 35 MPH with one engine, and I'm hoping it'll do almost twice that with two, I think (but don't know for sure) the land speed record is only around 60 MPH, so we're in with a chance! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Yeah, we have a pretty good time...just not very safely...or soberly.

Terry, it actually gets going pretty good after a block or so...its a pretty heavy set up with a pretty fat guy on it so it doesn't do great right off the line..

Only 60MPH?  Hell, I've done 40 MPH down a mountain pass on a fully loaded unmotorized mountain bike.  It took us 4 hours to get up the pass and less than 10 minutes to get down the other side  ;D

Yeah mate, that was according to Frank (754) but I don't know for sure. I've done 40 MPH on a Hybrid (mountain bike/road bike cross) down a steep hill on a paved road, that was fun until I got a "speed wobble" going, but when we go on the salt my cuz (who's about half my weight) will be the "pilot", and I'm hoping to convince him to do it butt naked, aka Rollie Free, or maybe in one of those Olympic swimming costumes, to reduce the drag, don't cha know.........  ;D

Thats it??

I used to own a carbon fiber Trek Y frame bike with skinny azz tires aluminum everything else almost.
I had modified the rear gear hub to have 3 gears, and the front had only 1 gear, a 62 tooth.
First gear for in town, 2nd to pass other bikes, and 3rd was *oh my god you better be going down hill*

On 287, theres a spot (??Virginia Dale??) between Ft. Collins colorado and Laramie wyoming has 1000(?) ft drop in a WAY short time, have passed cars doing 55 several times on it.
Sold that bike after i laid it down doing around 60+mph....Thank god for body armor/gloves and helmut.
Somewhere around 50mph the spokes would "sing"... hard to match that sound to anything... singing is the only explanation i can come up with.
Awesome though.

And as to motors??
I have a custom bike I made(all chromolly tubing) that I had a 25cc weed-eater motor on it.
Used to buzz around to and from work on the sucker.
25-30mph was all the motor could do on it's own.
But with me pedaling as well, easily 45+mph.

!!Got a 43 in a 30 zone ticket once!!

Cop tried to get me for no registration, no plates, and no insurance...
Until I went to court, and brought documents proving I only needed insurance registration and plates on anything over 50cc's.
But nonetheless I had to pay the speeding ticket.
HAHAHAHA... the look on the cops face in the courtroom was PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still have the motor, bike, and gearbox i used, but an accident(got forced off the road and motor would not die, ended up cracking the mount frame the motor was on) killed the mount frame for the back of the bike.

My son rides the custom bike now. Sans motor though.(he's dangerous enough on his own)
It was AWESOME on gas millage, 160 minimum mpg on average(low was about 140mpg), with me pedaling I hit 190ish mpg once.

Gotta hook that motor/gearbox up to another bike again one of these years...
That bike was FUN!

But the only downside was when people would ask me about it, if i would sell it or make them one, filling up ended up in 1/2 to 2 hour conversations at times.

However filling up for like $0.32 was worth it.(held like 1/5 or 1/4 gal), loved payng for 2-3 weeks of gas with change from the couch cushions!

Stock motor wise, and worm drive reduction gearbox, everything else was truly custom made by me.
Even had electric start!(stock for the motor)
I have the motor I ran, and one i never did re-assemble after having it hopped up by a old foggie who used to race 2 stokes back when he was younger.

Mabey I should re-hook it up, finish the little fairing project i had going at one time, and see what it'll do out at bonneville salt flats.
Dunno though, bike has NO suspension. but as long as it is, it feels like it does.

Yeah that's it mate, these engine kits are really "low tech" and designed for conditions in China where the motorised bike is the family transport, and two stroke fuel isn't quite the same quality as we enjoy here in the west, so while it's not all that fast (although I'd argue that 35 MPH feels pretty fast on a Bicycle) it'll probably last forever.

My cuz is an ex Suzuki factory trained two stroke tuner, and he's already mumbled something about raising the ports, blah blah blah, but for me, if we can break the record just by shoving two engines in the frame, then that will have achieved the aim, and I'd rather have a reliable ride capable of 60 MPH than an unreliable one with a theoretical top speed of 100 MPH.

I do like the idea of a couple of lightweight engines though, I suppose I could buy some cheap Chinese weed wackers, but I'll wait until we've got the record, then plan how we'll break it, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
