How to remove fork steering lock
« on: September 01, 2008, 05:42:37 PM »
I have bottom triple T for CB750 K4.  Bought as scrap replacement with the lock intact.  There are no keys or key numbers.  I would rather pick the lock than drill it.

The links are broken.  Does anyone remember how to pick the fork lock?

I haven't had reason to remove a SOHC Honda fork lock but I suspect it maybe similar to ones I am familiar with, BMW airhead fork locks.  The reason the lock came out with a broken key in it is because the key is needed to remove the lock. Without a key you are faced with drilling out the lock or picking the lock. You may find help about drilling the lock out here:

Or for info on picking the lock read here:

Well I have to do this tomorrow.  It's not the center.  Anybody know where to drill?

I have recently removed the fork lock in my Sanglas bike. It has been a while since I replaced my Honda lock, but if memory serves me, they are pretty much the same.

The lock is spring loaded. There is a small screw that protrudes. When you insert the key and turn it, the screw is then aligned with a recess, so you can push the lock until it locks the fork, and then turn again the key so the screw retains the lock in place.

The way I did it, following some advice found in internet, was to use a blunt chisel and hammer the lock until the tiny screw is broken. Then, with either a key or a wood screw, pull the lock out. I needed to drill the lock a little so I could insert the wood screw.

Some other forums suggest to drill the lock but not in the key hole -because the tumblers are very hard- but in the cylinder-to-body junction, where the screw is suppoused to be, until you drill the screw away.

Before doing anything, try with any Honda key you have available. Chances are one of them will work. There was something like seven different keys only.

Hope this helped....
