clutch basket conundrum
« on: September 09, 2008, 07:40:55 PM »
I've been helping a buddy of mine build his 75 CB550.  It's been pieced all together and run around the block a few times but I took the clutch cover off again because there is a misterious knocking noise on that side that disappears when the engines loaded and clutch is engaging.  According to the manual the clutch basket is only supposed to have .1mm of freeplay and I've got one hundred times that if not more, lol.  I've checked parts diagrams and it appears that I've got the shims and spacers in the right places.  If I attempt to stick a bigger shim in the c-clip doesn't seem to seat well enough to sooth my worries....

Check out the link and here's what's bugging me....
Part 2 on the diagram slides into the center of the clutch basket and both of these parts slide over the shaft and mount up against the thick spacer that goes between the clutch basket and the shaft bearing.  Just those parts have a ton of freeplay by them selves...  If I install both "piece 2" and the clutch basket with the spacer behind it onto the shaft and keep pressure on "piece 2" with my fingers.  I can pull the clutch basket back and forth a considerable amount because "piece 2" is longer than the clutch basket.

HELP?  I need some suggestions... this is really getting the best of me!

Wrong clutch basket from another bike?  Match the parts in the manual diagrams exactly, to the last detail,  Does the clutch work OK?
