original paint for 73 cb500
« on: September 14, 2005, 06:06:56 AM »
I am rebirthing a cb500 and would like to paint it in its original livery. Does anybody know how many colours they came in and some details that I could provide to a paint supplier to match these colours  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  ???

1973 from memory Candy Gold Custom, Candy Garnet Brown, Candy Jade Green and if you are not in the US Black. All the candies are three pack paints and none of them have "standard" colour codes that help a painter sorry
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

I have a 73 in Candy Bacchus Olive - it's a really interesting green. Of course, I think it's beautiful  :P Below are the 1973 colors and the website I found them at.  A collector once told me that the Sunrise Orange is the most rare. Hope this helps.

Lubritech have lone gone out of business ....so I'm told.
The paint codes here are apparantly their match for what they or someone considered to be a match for Hondas.
As Bryan pointed out, back then Honda did not have any codes for the colours.

Now., I used these Lubritech codes to get a "Candy garnet Brown"
and ended up getting ....Maroon, Not a bad colour but NOT brown.

So be carefull, if you cross reference these codes you will need to check the colour properly
all may not be as it seems.

Here is some correspondance I've had with ...DONNIE [dondirtbiker@excite.com]
Who was on the old forum.....not sure about this one.
I can't stand over this as I had already sprayed mine but here goes.....

"well it does exist but just not the original paint. the honda paints are long gone and the ones you see for sale on ebay in the small cans are probably not very good anymore. would you use paint 20 years old ?
i have formulated most of the early colors, including the candy garnet brown. but this is new reformulated paint thats 100 % urethane enamel and clear has much more uv resistance than any other clears. 3 times as much in fact. the candies had a tendency to fade on the early bikes because they lacked the chemicals for uv resistance in the clears. this additive is expensive and paint companies are out to make money so they tend to skimp on this. also many aftermarket companies dont even have true candies but solid bases that are close to original candy paints schemes. my kits are true candies, clears have 3 times the uv resistance and are used by many top professionals. okay i will quite rambling- your question was does candy garnet exist and the answer is yes and its new and inproved over the original by leaps and bounds.
have a great day
