if we were young again we would move to America where hard work is rewarded.

Ten years ago I'd have agreed with you.

Now, I'd go to (rural) France.

What about Italy, Being a mason for the last 22 years I would like to see and maybe live somewhere in Europe

Forget Italy. Every one seems to be trying to fiddle you. Forget the mafia. The worst one's the government! A whole lotta taxes and barely any services in return. When I was living there in the '80s a journalist did a head count on how many taxes an ordinary working person would have to legally pay in the course of 1 financial year............186!!! That's 186 different taxes; income tax, council tax, road tax, television tax and so on. The best one is that there's even a refrigirator Tax!!! It seems that there's an obscure law that states that anyone owning a refrigirator is supposed to pay a tax on it!! But here comes the funniest part; it costs more to collect this tax than what the gov'mt makes out of it. So if you go to the local post office and ask for the form to pay your refrigirator tax, they won't give it to you!!
Tell you a little secret. If you really do want to come to Europe, try Austria. Beautiful country, good skiing, almost guaranteed summers, slow laid-back lifestyle in the countryside. Property in the country side is cheap, hardly anyone buys, almost everyone rents. Good services, nice roads, natives are generally harmeless.

Well, from private expriences - that HEAVILY depends where you come from. For me Austrians are more Gemrna than Germans... but that's me. Roads and skiing is fabulous.
But then you have Corsica (with diving! and great roads too) or Madeira in Atlantic ocean, roads there.. mmmmm, turns on the cliffs... and diving too...

You'll have to excuse my American ignorance, is there not 4 or 5 liters in an American gallon?

10.90 a gallon?

with 3 cars, 1 company truck, 2 motorcycles for 3 licensed drivers I spend about $270.00 - $300.00 per week in gas @  $4.00 per US Gallon.

If it gets much higher it will be cheaper for one of us to not work, where I live public transportation does not exist.

:D I told you guys, you're lucky to get the gasprices you're currently paying. With the motorcycles it's not a big problem, they don't use that much. Plus it's a small country so you don't have to drive that far anyway.
I borrowed a V8 AMG Mercedes the other day to drive to Germany, I has tears in my eyes at the gas station ;D

Most of the extra cost in gasprices and cigarettes goes to taxes, so i'm ok with that. We have good healthcare and nobody in our country has to sleep on the street or live in poverty.

I just did 1000km in a weekend on CB1300.. Goes like a bullet, but it hurts too... over 90mph it will take easily 7l/100kms. But the power.. hmm.... today I had a feeling that my rear brake is jammed or something... but alas, I was back on my CB650...  ;D

But back to the topic - Europe is expensive, period. US is (in comparison) much cheaper to live. And that's that.

The man's got 4 motorbikes, off course he can come and live in New Zealand!!! ;D

Petrol here is $2 a litre,
Smokes (people still do that to themselves?) $12 a pack of 25's
Bread $1 for a budget loaf or $8 for something with real guts.
Can of beans $1.50
Beer $20 a dozen small bottles.
We pay 33cents in the dollar tax for a run down healthcare system I wouldn't put my dog through, Police are under resourced, gangs literally get away with murder, anything deemed "native" is sacred and the politically correct hold sway over our 4 million people, we are bleeding our youngest and brightest to Australia and I can't blame them..a few years younger and I'd be there too!
Finding a SOHC 4 to restore.........still priceless. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!
