*&#$^% centrifugal advance
« on: September 14, 2005, 06:50:35 PM »
Well, I was just touching up the timing before taking the bike to a concert tonight. The timing was advanced a hair at idle and retarded a hair at RPM, so I took the advancer off and bent the ears out a bit. Problem is, the second ear sheared right off. #$*&@! pot metal. I've got J-B Weld on it now (lot of good that does me for the show tonight, I'll have to take the CAR) but I'm not sure how much I trust it.

Anyone out there have a spare I can buy from them? Bike is a '75 550F, but I think the units were the same across the SOHC4 line.

I probably have a spare, If you could post a pic it would help.

Now, as to bending the advance, WTF?

In the future you can adjust your points gap for the same effect. Set the "advance" timing with the plate adjustment, then adjust the points gap until you hit the "F" mark at idle. This won't work with an electronic(Dyna) ignition, of course.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

scondon: Dyna ignition, of course ;) And won't that affect your dwell, if that's what you use to set gap by?

kghost: i'll post a pic in the morning. But I'm not entirely off my rocker. If you find that your advancer doesn't advance enough, you can bend the ears out a bit. Or so goes the story. Guess the metal isn't as pliable as I gave it credit for.

www.davidsilverspares.co.uk has NOS onthe shelf and the other models have different weights and springs for different advance curves (according to honda) you need the 500/550 one which has a 323 midle number, also on the back of the advance
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

I set the timing with a timing light and have never checked "dwell". I set the points gap with a feeler gauge to start and adjust from there with the bike running. I've read all kinds of timing procedures and haven't come across this method yet, but the bike sure seems to like it.

In my opinion, the "advance" marks are what matter. The "F" mark just insures that your bike "sounds" nice while idling in the driveway :)
