the "tons of reputable names on here" are most likely already watching your build thread, just keep posting there     ;D ;D 8)

Right-on.  I'll just keep-on plugging.  I have a 14 day deadline to get the bike done so I can ride the beast into school on the first day of senior year :D  So at that, won't be doing anything crazy to her until winter.  But be forwarned, the retarded questions will be all over the place come then ;)

Could someone show me a slotted cam gear? And how did you slot it?

I have the money for the Cam, I have a dial gauge and plexie timming wheel. I also have a low mileage motor ready to be painted and a new Athena gasket set. All sitting on my work table right now....

I'm very tempted to do this, need more info.

what it is is, the sproket mount holes are elongated , so that you can turn the cam while the sproket stays put , dynoman sells them for the 750,   i made mine with a dremel, and wouldn't do it again (it was a real #$%*, and took forever)

Spikey, I can't believe your this far along with a bike that was nearly burned to the ground. Great work, must feel awesome to have it reborn better/faster/stronger than before. BTW, your new(ish) avatar reflects what a true badass ya are ;) :) ;D

i used a burr bit in my drill press. it really took so little material removed to gain the 5 degrees movement i needed.

Rotary table on a mill. It doesn't need to be elongated this much but while it was set up...

So... Can someone explain to me what a cam does and what "timing" a cam is?  Even a link to another website, any information is better than non

Here's a link from Old Fart's page that may help with some of the engine basics.  Google search for motorcycle camshaft timing and you'll find plenty of in depth articles.

short answer: the cam is what controls the opening of the valves to allow fuel/air in and exhaust out. the timing of those events is critical to the running of any engine, but the fine tuning of the exact time in which those event happens is what we are referring to here. advancing or retarding the whole cam (since these are single cam engines) will affect the opening and closing of all the valves, and can have a profound impact on performance- for better or worse.

Been a while since I've visited this thread.  Thanks for that, Paul.

i had to dig up this thread be cause i finally got the bike all tuned and wanted to post my results

75 CB550f
12600 cam (set at stock marks, not degreed)
K&N pods
Mac 4-1
stock carbs: 110mains, stock idle jets, needle in stock position, screws 1 1\2 turns out (i'm at or around sea level)

120 MPH at 8000 RPM !!!!!

i looked down at the speedo and didn't believe my eyes

Just outa curiousity, what was the speedo reading BEFORE the cam?  And what were the upgrades at that point-in-time?

it was bone stock before that, and cherry as all hell, ...perfect orange metal flake (original), it was an f so it had the 4to 1 already (not a mac, odiously). i had it a little over a month and got it up to about 90ish but didn't push it much... then my buddy wrecked it  >:(...and himself .. and it slowly morphed into what is now  ;D ;D
