Found something interesting in my garage.....
« on: October 15, 2008, 04:32:28 PM »

I found the big one in my garage when I moved in 10 years ago.

The little one is out of my CB350F currently undergoing a rebuild.
The middle one is from my 1980 Triumph Spitfire 1500.
I found the big one in my garage when I moved in 10 years ago. I don't know what it's from. Anyone care to speculate?

Mark.

By the color of the two top rings (orange) I would say they are made out of Viton. So my guess would be a compressor piston.

didn't think of that.  I thought the orange was just rust.  Whatever it is, it is dished for low compression.  If automotive, perhaps a turbo or supercharged application.

What's the black thing in the center of the dish?  Looks like plastic.

based on the plastic and the cutouts at the top of the piston i'm going w/ the compressor idea.

That looks like a piston out of a v-16 diesel engine.
How big is it's diameter?
How tall?

Only saw a few sets of pistons for them, but the used ones more often than not looked like the one you have.

You really want to find out?
Find a diesel motor repair place. If they work on Train motors, or the ilk (big mofo diesels) they might know.

It could be a compressor piston as well.
But most compressor pistons I have seen tend to mainly flat topped.

Almost all of the Diesel pistons I have seen have that deep recession in them, helps keep the fuel atomized by keeping it swirling after it is injected into the cylinder.

It's dead weight because you don't have the block it belongs to?

Home defense system? Some one breaks in just smack em up side the head, that'll do pig, that'll do.

The orange looks like rust to me.

The thing in the middle is definitely not plastic. It's some kind of bolt/plug that goes through to the underside. Not sure what the cutouts might be for.

It measures 5 3/4" x 8 1/4"

You're right, it probably would make a good boat anchor although I think my wife would more likely want to get away from me!  I'm always bringing motorcycle/car parts into the house to clean, measure, photograph etc. and she never says a word. She even tolerated my dad and I performing the final assembly on my spitfire engine in our kitchen [Mark rumages through his picture archives and comes up with....]

I like the home defense idea. Maybe I can keep in in the livingroom just for that purpose ;D

I don't really have any need to find out what it's from, just thought you all might find it interesting.

Mark.

How about a '50s CAT D-8 ? That was a diesel with a 5-3/4" bore. Not sure what the bolt is about - barnyard repair attempt maybe. Iron ring groove inserts are pretty common in heavy duty stuff.

Happy trails.
