El-cheap-o muffler
« on: October 09, 2008, 03:49:00 PM »
I bought my dad's old 78 750k, I've been getting it back together. He's had it 6-7 yrs rode 4 times. He's not a bike guy...The guy he got it from, hillybilly-ed it. The exhaust is a 4 into 1. No baffle, So I bought a cherry bomb muffler, cut the back end, and welded in a plate to cap it off. And it sounds great! I'm very happy for $28.00

 :-[ ...that's brilliant! they're like $20-$30 these days.

I'm tempted to try it for fun! In fact I have an old glasspac here somewhere.

I agree about the site being a great source of info, thanks for contributing to it!

Nice solution!

Did you have to re-jet the carbs for it?
You can't make too much popcorn, but you can definately eat too much popcorn.

No re jetting so far.  I'm not on the road yet, I've been having a time with the clutch adjustment and the timing. It's been a long time setting points.
But it does sound good!  (Aside from the back firing) I haven't owned a timing light in years. Static timing isn't working for me. I'm going to go breaker less soon, so much easier.
The reason I did this, I couldn't find a 2 1/2" muffler at a reasonable cost, without buying a whole new system.  I love my portaband bandsaw!
I'd be open to helping out anyone who wanted to do this. The most time consuming was cutting and grinding to fit the back plate for the baffle being at 45 deg.  Scooter

I didn't even bother to modify the one I fitted to CB360, looked enough like an old Burgess silencer to leave alone.

All that stuff is going, its only there so I can get dyno runs without making the tester curl up into a ball (he admits to being 280lbs) clip-on's are made, so are the rearsets. I'm doing linkages when I get carburation finalised then putting all the 'race' bits on it.

You mean you did not want to spend $700-$1500. dollars for a garbage can muffler?
Whats wrong with you? LOL

BTW...Backfiring is usually a lean condition but since the bike has been sitting for so long check that the idle jets are clear then think about a pilot air screw adjustment, and then mainjet change.
What intake is on the bike? No change to intake- rejetting not necessary.
