Cool Speedo & Tach Trim idea..
« on: October 13, 2008, 07:30:25 PM »
A buddy of mine works at a Tool & Die shop. I get along good with the founder and am in their old building.

Anyway, I showed him some speedo cores and he said they make a part that may fit them.

So today he brings in the trim ring they make, it has a radiused edge, not as pointy as stock CB750, and it almost fits, in fact it fits the lip nearly perfect, problem is the side is straight. But we can make a die to taper them.. that would result in a stainless trim ring about 5/16 high, that would silicone onto the edge of the tach or speedos.. the inner hole size looks like it matches the edge of the point of the speedo cover..
Am looking into availability of these..

First off, The sample went back with the guy that brought it.

So next, we are going to ask the Big KIWIkahuna, IF they can sell us any rings..they may choose not too, or may not be able if the dies are end-user owned.

Then my buddy may be able to email a pic if we make something to push the taper onto the sides..

Just as an experiment, I pulled an old scrap tachometer apart yesterday, by prying up one edge of the seal ring.  Even though that edge of the seal gets somewhat tattered, I was able to refurbish the edge with curved needle-nose pliers - creating a j-shaped edge (in cross section).  Since the somewhat mangled lip will end up at the rear of any reassembly, any rough edge will be hidden by the large rubber bushing of the gauge holder.

My only tools were a tiny flathead screwdriver and small curved needle-nose pliers.  Oh, and lots of patience.

To reassemble, the inside of the ring would need to be coated with a little silicone caulking, or a new rubber seal (the old ring seal was mangled in the prying-open process).

Instead of prying, sweating and cursing, I could have just cut through the old ring with a dremel tool, and used your brand spanking new ring for reassembly.  Much less frustrating and no messy edge - great idea!

On a side note: I couldn't figure out how to remove the needle from the spindle and I'm afraid the pin snapped when I forcefully pried the needle up from the faceplate.  Ah well :-\

Edit: added a photo

That ring you speak of is something I was thinking about trying to make, as there is a demand..

The new idea though is a shy ring you add onto the black cover, next to the glass..

They would be pretty easy to make, an experienced spinnering lathe operator could easily spin some 80 pcs/hr of those housing covers but I don't think theres a demand for these. Tooling would be inexpensive too, you can even make it out of wood if you're only making a couple of pieces.

80 an hour, lets get them made that way!

The ones I mentioned were polished stainless, would need some touching up. .

But I dont think they would come in pairs at under 20 dollars..probably more..

It's really that easy to make these pieces, a spinning lathe is very similar to a woodworking lathe. Regarding cost it depends on how much profit you want to make.
