Pic of a steering lock? '77 550
« on: October 29, 2008, 01:54:30 PM »
I was working on the bike yesterday and realized I hadn't ever tried the steering lock.  Turned the key left and jiggled the bars a bit, and it locked.  But I could still turn the bars.  WTF?  Looked where I thought the mechanism should be, in the steering stem hollow area I think, but nothing's there.  The lock mechanism is, I can see it working when I turn the key.
I'd like to get one if possible.  Anyone have a spare or a pic to help me hunt this down?

It should lock against the flange at the top of the steering stem, maybe yours is bent?

Hmmm if that's the case maybe mine's been ground down.  Got a pic of yours?

Well mine's just AWOL.  I'll chalk that up to the PO.  Did any of the earlier bikes come w/o that on the neck?

I only discovered my (79 650) bikes steering lock by chance last week, I just assumed the cops never needed them so left them out of the specs.
Mine works fine, push key into ignition and turn left, lock works great but the front wheel needs to be tilted hard to the left.
My 650 Custom has common lock with separate key at teh bottom of the steering triple tree.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Mine looks just like Kotkkehead's above, except that large "collar" just isn't on mine.  Doesn't look hacked, but then again, my vin on the left side of the neck looks as if it was.  So I wouldn't rule out one of the PO's hacking it off at some point.

I'm gonna cut mine off, so I could mail it to you if you really want the lock and have access to a welder.

I'm not going to be able to handle that on this bike, but let me make sure my other frame has one before I say no.
