Choke Arm Redesign
« on: April 14, 2005, 11:04:20 AM »
Hey All:

This started in another thread but I wanted to post it anew with a valid thread title so that people might find it in the future.

The pic below show a CAD model of the old plastic arm that was broken.  The second picture is of a redesigned part that should be easily fabbed by anyone with basic machining skill.

I'm having one made right now by a friend of a friend.  It'll be steel and very sturdy.  If anyone would like the PDF drawing that I made for this, PM me and I'll email it to you.

I'll post pics of the part when it's finished.

hey that would be great but the choke on my 78K is already steel. The new one you have would be much stronger even if it was still done in plastic. I can see it now. The bike blows up and the only thing left is a choke lever! ;D

Paul.
It hurts to admit when you've made mistakes, But when the're big enough, the pain only lasts a second

True, I did it with SillyWorks.  I dimensioned with ordinates, to make it easy for whoever is machining it.

They are going to either use steel or stainless, depending.  Either way, I don't care.

When I get the part(s), (they're going to do 4 parts) there is a bit of finish work to be done -- I'll need to take my grinder and a sanding pad to grind the "cam" that operates the throttle when you choke the engine.  Easier to do it by eye than with a manual mill.

BTW, this is for a 650 and I doubt would work for any other bikes.

If you have any extras I would really like to buy one off of you...I just bought a 80 650 as a project and the carbs didn't even have the arm on them.

Thanks

Sorry Yank.

I didn't see your post.

A guy from the SOHC site "babyfood" has built one for me.  You might ask him if he'd be interested in doing it for you.

The one tough thing though is that the back of the arm has a "cam" on it that actuates the throttle just the right amount.  You'd need to grind this profile onto the part.

If you can get him to make one I can probably send you a tracing of the profile.
