Mike,

I have the same bike and the same experience level as you.  I have no garage to work in so my bike is in my basement is a series of 1 gallon zip loc bags basically.  I refer to it as my bike-in-a-bag.  I haven't started rebuilding anything yet, but I sure am good a tearing things apart.... ;)

I have a build thread started.  I'm in need of an update with new pics though.

I have to say I would never had attempted this project if I had not found this site.  It's better than any manual you will find.  You can find several on here to download by the way if you search.

Anyway, good luck and I assure you if you get stuck along the way, there are MANY people on here who will help you out.

That front hub looks nice by the way.  Did you replace any of the wheel bearings?  I'm going to although I think the stock bearings were still OK. I figure if I'm tearing it down this far, I better replace them while I'm there.

Mike,

congrats on the bike. i am in the same boat with you and daytonGuy. i aquired a 76 550 a few weeks ago, and try and take a little more apart each night. hopefully the carbs come off tonight. i don't know about you guys, but i am pretty excited. i have never done anything like this before, though i am not competley without mechanical experience. hopefully i will get my own thread and pics up soon. until then, take care.

cheers guys

all new to me but getting on ok, frame totally stripped, powdercoated in silver, along with stands swingarm etc, wheels recently had new bearing in them so dont have to go there, front rim and spokes  are being replaced. Engine well i have  a complete gasket and seal kit ( and an ex honda mechanic on stand by )

taper roller bearings are in , so once front wheel is done and engine stripped and rebuilt , rebuild will start , had some work done on mudguards ( fenders  ;) )

will check out your rebuild thread and report back ,  cheers mike
