Anyone know anything about this bike?
« on: November 11, 2008, 10:19:59 PM »
I've been downloading pics for several months now whenever I come across a cafe build that catches my eye trying to figure out what I want to do with my 76' CB750 project bike.  Anyway, I was looking through some of the pics and I really like the tank, seat, and tail on this bike but can't remember where I got the pic from and am unable to find it online again to get any kind of info(and yes I googled the text in the corner, which turned up no results).

I'm curious if anyone on this site recognizes the gas tank and/or seat/tail section, or even the whole bike and how I could get my hands on them?  I am thinking about modelinig my bike after this since I like the look, and the color too, it even has the dual front disc conversion I've been planning on.  And if anyone knows of any additional pics of the bike that would be awesome too!!  :)

I think the gas tank and seat are from airtech.com

it's definitely CR750 styling. you can get fiberglass from airtech, or alloy from other sources. there are several members on here with CR750 replicas. check out samCR's.

Thanks for the info!

I just got addicted to my first CB750 and hadn't even heard of the CR's :)

I'm guessing by the fact that there are replicas out there that the odds of finding an original CR750 are pretty slim(that and I couldn't find any on ebay or craigslist).  This is more just curiosity since I don't have the money for another bike right now either way, but from what I've found online the CR's are basically just a hopped up CB?  Though I know to keep my eye out now if I do come across one  ;D

honda sold complete conversion kits over the counter back then, but you'd be hard pressed to find an original now. do a little searching around- there's a great history there. honda had 4 factory racers the first year and only one made it to the finish, but won. there were some privateers i believe, but i have no idea how many kits were sold. there are articles and pictures, etc. somewhere on this site.

don't forget that honda also recalled the 970 kits (CR750 kits) sometime in the late 1970s so what is out there is very very rare.

Also Rickman's street cb750s were called CR750s also, this is not to be confused with Honda's cr750 which was a competition only race bike/kit.

In the pic I am pretty sure that is at the very least an airtech tank because it does not have the rear sump and as far as I know airtech is the only one that makes a CR 750 tank without the stock rear sump. A stock cr750 tank requires use of a special oil tank to accomidate the rear sump underneath and that oil tank precludes you from using the stock sidecovers because of its shape. The bike in the pic still has its stock sidecovers and stock oil tank which would not work with the rear sump.

I really like the dunstall rearsets, alloy rims (including the drop center rear) and the goldwing front end on that bike (with steering dampner)

There is a huge threadon the CRs in this same forum. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=27902.0

"just a hopped up CB" has some truth to it in that the frame and cases were the same. But it was a huge project changing virtually every part for something similar but lighter, faster, stronger, etc.

"just a hopped up CB" has some truth to it in that the frame and cases were the same. But it was a huge project changing virtually every part for something similar but lighter, faster, stronger, etc.

In the case of the bikes that ran at daytona, even the engine cases and frames were different. The design was the same but the materials were different and those pieces were hand built. The Kits honda sold did use a production cb750 frame and engine case. Before Vic World's site went down he had a factory pic on there of what went into a 970 kit - it was a lot of stuff and not just engine and bodywork, suspension and controls as well.  Some of the kit items were:

race camshaft, stronger valve springs, oversize inlet valves and smaller exhaust valves, 2 ring 10.5:1 slipper pistons (standard is 3 ring 9:1), a close ratio gearbox and battery-less ignition fixed at 35 degrees advance. Also included were four open megaphones, rear sets, racing seat, petrol tank, aluminium oil tank, fairing, twin disks up front and a giant 240mm 2 leading shoe drum brake up back. Special camchains and primary chains were also supplied but this did not prevent numerous cam chain failures during races.

I copied the above from here, some good pics if you want to build a replica:

You beat me to it...was just about to ask if anyone knew about those forks  ;D  Which brings me to the next question, what kind of mods are necessary to swap out the stock forks with goldwing forks or are there forks that can just be swapped out for?

Those forks are stock cb750 forks...the early wings have calipers mounted behind the fork leg, much like the cb750f2's. Also, they've got 4 studs holding the axle cap on, instead of the 2 like the caps in the picture. That bike is downright sexy though... ;)
Hope this helps!

I dunno, they look a lot thicker than the stock 750 forks, The caliper looks funny too and I am pretty sure that is a DID rim which is came stock on the hondamatics and the GL1000. The Trees also look to have the higher risers that a GL clamp has.

As far as where thew caliper is actually mounted, well that kinda doesn't matter as you can just turn the legs around. I used to do it on my drag bike to put the caliper behind the fork legs. To be honest though it is not a good picture and details are pretty fuzzy at best. It will be easier to tell with a better photo.

AS far as putting a Goldwing front end on a cb750, you need the complete front end of a 1975 to 1977 GL1000 from the trees to the wheel including brakes, and then it just bolts on at the neck. You will then have to find a way to mount your headlight (if you choose to ditch the stock fork ears) and the gauges.
