header wrap.
« on: November 18, 2008, 08:25:21 AM »
I'm getting ready to wrap the MAC header for my 550.  How much wrap would I need.  50ft do?   Should I get 1" or 2".  Doing it in black.

Thanks

50' won't be enough for 1'' wrap.  I had good results with the 2''.

Plenty with the 2"

Thanks. Looks like you overlapped about 1" too.  Did you bring all the headers down and overlap where they meet and then start new at the 4-1 joint going to the tip?  Thanks

50' in 2" should be plenty. I used that on my stock 4-4 550 headers and used about 9 feet for each pipe, leaving 14 extra feet if I need to redo a pipe or something heh...

As far as I remember that's how I did it.  I did the outer headers first, then I wet to cyl. #2, down, and then back up #3 without breaking the wrap.  I figured it'd be tighter that way.  I used a 3M rust and paint removal disk to remove any pitting in the headers, and then coated them with 1200` header paint.  I sealed the wrap with Sillicone header wrap paint, and used stainless ties and hose clamps to finish it off.
