'80 CB650 Custom special tools needed for tuneup??
« on: January 19, 2009, 11:46:28 AM »
I was reading through the Clymer manual and it says you have to use a special tool to adjust the tappets/valves. It looks like this one that Z1 carries:

I will also be tuning up my cb500. I am wondering if these tools are really necissary, or can I get away with a flat screwdriver and a box wrench? Are they worth the money to save lots of irritation? I am trying to plan out the money and if I can put the money into paint or something I'd rather do that.

Thanks,

Brandon

Don't know about the 650, but all you need for
the 500 is a flat wrench and screwdriver.

i've never used the special tools on my 650 just a wrench and screw driver along with the feeler gauge.

That adjustment nut is down in a hole pretty good. I made one that looks like that one by welding a (12mm?) socket to an old wrench. Use atleast a 1/2'' drive socket so you can fit a screwdriver through the socket.  Works great. 8)

Possibly different on your bike, but doing this on a 350F with a box wrench sucks.

Tony650, I've thought of doing that, guess maybe I will. Gotta be cheaper than those nice tools. Guess I'll just try and make one. Thanks everyone for the responses!!
