Need Cool Taillight
« on: December 19, 2008, 02:55:18 PM »
I'm looking for a nice sort of retro style taillight that can be panel mounted on the back of my tail section.  I had bought this one (which I really like), but the diameter is too large (about 3.75 inches):

I'm looking for something that is in the 2.5 to 3 inch range.

Anyone know of anything like that?  I've searched everywhere and even ordered on that looked OK, but it was really cheaply constructed out of chromed plastic and so forth.  The one above that Carpy sells is solid.  Made out of glass and metal.  But just too big.

Go to your local wreckers and just browse around. The older the car the better with what your looking for. Or try a hotrod shop, they will have repro 20`s and 30`s lights that will be perfect

I checked all around that site, but I probably should go over it again as it is pretty extensive.  I love this light style:

But it is also too big.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Well, the Model A "tea cup" style tail light was going to be my suggestion.  I'm spent.

Does the light need to be round? What are your design requirements?

I bought a couple of LED lights, 28 'bulb' 12V. brake/tail.
I think they were originally from a high level truck/car light (Its similar to Ford Ranger/Mazda B2300 pickup)
I fitted one to my XS650 several years ago and had no problems with it. (XS vibrates 'a bit',  ;D)
Its only an inch thick and can be cut down to narrow it.

This wont help averybody,

A buddy that builds a few bikes does this. Builds his own  lenses. then puts LED,s behind them.. I think lenses are just glued in, will have to ask. At first they were sort of bigger, maybe signal light size, but eventually he got it to the point where they could fit in the  leading edge of the fender ! (great for bobber, not cafe maybe).

Anyway, full functioning signals and stop lights in a very clean package, some folks think there are none on the bike till they get lit up to show you.

I know they used to use prismic red lense material from the sign industry..looks like a piece of a flourescent light cover, smooth one side, knurled look on ther other.

I don't know if there are red lenses available, but the blinker on the front of a KZ1000 LTD (1982) is 3" wide and might be converted to work.

Back in the early 70s Suzuki used red turn signals on the back of their bikes, why not use one of them for a tail light?

OK, here's a link for you that's got dozens of cool lights, after the first page loaded I thought wow, then I noticed they have four more pages of lights too.

check out the  50 Pontiac (LED)  [TL-50PLED]  at the bottom of the first page, it might be what you need.

A cool site all in all, you might look out if your wife or girlfriend is around though....  ;)

I bought the Seat off ebay awhile back.

Then I bought two 2.25" Dynamic Clusters from Custom Dynamics. Just took a hole saw to mount them. Crazy Super bright, and turnsignals built in.

I would like to see someone use a newer cadilac tail light; the tall skinny ones and mount them on the sides of the shocks, parallel with a verticle license plate.

Yeah the more I read there, the more I want to chuck it all and build bikes for a living....I watched way too much biker build-off.  Check out the shotglass tail light when you get a chance, just google it as it may take a while to navigate to it on their site.
