Harley Sportster front end...WTF?
« on: January 06, 2009, 05:34:50 PM »
I am over it, live and let live.  I get Goldwing frontends off feebay and also parts bikes.  They are often free, sometimes $20.00 and sometimes a little more.  Harley tubes are 41mm, that should give a clue as to their origin.  ;)

lol, I always wonder about stuff like that. one of my neighbors  ( a great guy btw) has a heritage harley.  bought it new and it has a few thousand miles on it and the shifter jsut stopped working.  turns out it rusts inside on the pivot and harley has it on the maint schedule to disassemble and grease it. apparently you do this a lot, like every few thousand miles.  the harley dealer told him it was just how it was and has been for a long time.  my neighbor laughed at the ridiculousness of it all and says that you know what HD means... hundreds of dollars lol!!  so that must be a hundreds of dollars front end you have there, to make a short story long ;)

We have a lot of Hardly Riders at work...  They Hardly ride!  Right now, it's just me and a BMW dual sport that dare venture out in this weather.  Must really suck to spend that kinda coin on a bike you only ride 5 months of the year.

\rant
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

They're afraid of their shifters rusting up.

There are so many Harley new take-offs sitting in sheds, garages, and basements (in my case) that they damn near have to be given away. How about a set of Fattie wheels, new exhaust, seat, engine parts, non chrome parts, front end pieces, etc, etc. One day I will get around to listing them for the Fat Boy owners that need to refresh their high mileage bikes, their wrecked bikes or build bikes. Ask the dude "if it's worth so much why does he still have it?"
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

aright aright take it easy. My harley is almost as shiny as a show bike and i ride it every day to an from work when weather permits, were not all fat older middle aged guys. harley parts are expensive, just the way it is. is it dumb yea, are they worth it... people pay it so i would guess so. that guy will probably get more money for that front end because some one who wants a harley part will pay more. guess its just the way it is

I hope you are kidding   ???

You offer the guy the price of a set of forktubes for a late model front end, then you snivel when he does not accept the offer.. sheesh..

Same as GoldWing.. ??? How so?

If it is, jusy buy the wing fork and be done with it..

BTW where do you get wing forks for 20.00?

If a Honda engineer did that, the offending individual would be required to kill themselves in the parking lot on lunch break.  Harley owners remind me of bad marriages.  She may be fat, slow, dirty, loud, high maintenance, expensive, and demanding, but hey, she is mine and I love her.  And then they wonder why us Honda riders are so happy all the time, go figure.    ;D ;D ;D and  ;)

Are they still using SHOWA, just like many other manufacturers?  like Honda for instance...

35mm is pretty much same as 1 3/8... (narrow glide)

41mm should be close to 1 5/8.......(wide glide)

Yes, they used Showa & Kayaba forks, but that does not mean that a CB750 fork will change out with a Superglide..

My "other" bike is a custom built Harley with the logo on the tank that says "Hardly Davidson". It gets quite a few comments from those sharp enough to notice it. It was named thus because in this state the frame denotes the make and since mine is not a Harley frame it's classed as a custom motorcycle. By the way, mine gets ridden!

the actual shifter itself, where it pivots, gets rusty. it is just how it goes, I actually have 2 neighbors it happened to this year, one th one I mentioned, the other is a sportster. it is in the required maint according to the dealer.  biggest dealer in NH :)

About the pricey thing with HD's..... That's what you get for american built, we are not cheap labor has been said for decades.. You should see the Pampered chef party my wife had yesterday, 15.00$ spatula I said that's crazy to her but it would prob. last as long as 5 of the 3.00$ ones...
Then I stated to her the main reason for the high price of their items were the fact that they were made in america...
I would love to have a HD springer classic, but can only afford an old honda.....
My buddys 07' softtail deluxe was the shizzle, he let me ride it quite a few times for a smoke or two......

And there was me thinking to myself "gosh, it's been a while since there was a HD bashing thread."

There are NO bad motorcycles; just the peole who ride them can be questionable. ;)

so That would be manchvegas.. i think. whatever point is its the first iv heard of it. i dont bring my harley to the dealer but i still cant see how or where it would rust out. theres the shaft and splines then it goes internal... if the splines rusted then i dont know what to tell ya. I reef on my shifter all the time. most guys remove the rear rocker shifter, i left mine on and angled it differently because when launching off a light or drag racing you can really kick through the gears fast since your kicking downward to get the up shift.

That's a nice fatboy brother, I too have fell for the streetglides this last summer. The springer classic was my first "want", but the old cb will always be my main want as it has for 10 years now BUT I will get a Harley springer or streetglide eventually......
Gotta get the 72' chev 3/4ton restored and the 03' ram 4x4 paid off first..... :( :( :(
