Wiring Harness -- Build my own?
« on: January 08, 2009, 08:55:06 AM »
I have a 78 750SS that burned up the harness a while ago. I finally found a work space and want to start on rewiring. My question, Is it a good idea to build my own and if so where can I get the appropriate wire? or should I just buy a full harness? I am pretty good with soldering and such but have never worked on bikes.
Any suggestions appreciated,
Thanks.

Wire is now available at Z1 enterprises.
Connectors are available at http://www.vintageconnections.com/

Now the question if if it's a good idea...  I'll leave that to others.  Going your own way you at least know that it'll be done right, without old (possibly corroded) wire, the joints will be good with soldered connectors.  Or you'll know who to blame.

partsnmore.com sells replacement stock looms for the earlier K bikes.

Z1Enterprises.com sells stock looking colored wire if you want to make your own.

If you were going to build a stripped down loom eliminating turn signals and warning lights and stuff like that, then you'd probably be better off building your own vs modifying a stock harness.  But if your goal is to replicate a stock loom, then you're probably better off buying a good used or new one.

I built a new loom for my '78 550K last spring using all new wire bought through a friend of mine who is a professional auto-electrician.

However, the last two looms I built for our competition cars (my usual evening time filler) were built using wire salvaged from nearly new insurance write off cars.

I don't know how it works on the US, but here in the UK, auto breakers generally don't consider a wrecked car's loom to be a value part, so you can pick up really good quality stuff for next to no outlay 8)

Unfortunately the 78 harness is different from the 76

How different are they? I was thinking of picking up one from partsnmore and changing connectors if need be...
